Workmen Answer Statement From Plant Officials
A Bath Iron Works machinists committee led by William Shaughnessy and others issued a reply to coverage of their Saturday walkout. They defend the strike as not aimed at the government, cite wage cuts for the Tron Works to build five lightships, and argue Labor Board rulings blocked contracting work with lower-wage shops. The stoppage followed the discharge of a man who refused locomotive material work, and the group says it was prompted by that action and not government business.

Harding Plans for Maine Vacation Uncertain for 1920 Campaign
Reports say President Harding may visit Maine with a campaign stop in Bangor or Bar Harbor if he travels East, though plans have not matured. State Republicans plan speaker assignments in Augusta and a large Island Park gathering August 16, with figures like Charles Hughes, Herbert Hoover, and Beveridge possibilities. Bar Harbor hosts Secret Service and destroyers as Harding contemplates a Summer White House visit, while local Republicans prep receptions and candidate meetings. Local farms and cattle costs cited in unrelated notes from Readfield.

Bath Iron Works workers walkout over strike stance
Bath Iron Works officials issue a statement clarifying a walkout by 29 machine shop employees on a Saturday forenoon.
