The First Baptist Church in Woolwich Center marks its 135th year with observances led by Summer minister Ira Jay Martin III. A historical sketch by Martin highlights the church’s origins and early settlers who founded the Woolwich parish beginning in 1654.
Historical records recount the 18th century formation of the Woolwich Bowdoinham Baptist Society in Maine, its break from the Congregational church, and the August 11 1800 incorporation led by Elder Joseph Bayley and Deacon Samuel Stinson. It notes leaders, covenants, and the move toward church state separation by 1909 under Dr. Bousfield.
A severe Monday morning electrical storm at Popham Beach caused a fire in Society hall after a lightning strike. The cupola and front were damaged, estimated at 400 dollars, while a pine tree near Morse cottage split in two. Coast Guardsmen and Bath fire department teamed to control the blaze, with Engine 3 and Chemical 3 responding and returning by 8 55.
Four Bath food markets were hit Saturday by rubber check specialists who used a fake Bath Iron Works contact and a yacht steward ruse to obtain groceries. The scheme involved two men in Bath and another in Rockland, with checks ranging from 25 to 28 dollars and totaling about 65 dollars.

Local sportsmen voice strong opposition to new federal rules for Merrymeeting Bay. The 26 day season runs 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. with bans on sinkboxes live decoys and open water shooting and a three shell limit for autos. Officials warn impact will hurt Bay visitors and local economy.
John C. Fitzgerald of Bath was appointed assistant Works Progress Administrator for Maine by Albert Abrahamson of Portland. An active New Dealer and former Sagadahoc county NAACP? No, Repeal movement organizer, he has held multiple county roles and served in World War I. He was born in Bath, attended Morse High School, Hebron Academy, Bowdoin and University of Maine Law, and later practiced law in Fitchburg before returning to Maine. He lives at 842 Washington Street with wife and three children. Harold J. Sonia, 103 Beacon Street, left for two days in Boston.
Mr and Mrs John T Parris quietly celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary at their Upper Washington Street home beside the Kennebec. They received many callers and greetings by letter post card and telephone as they reflect on a long life in the house built by John Innis and passed through generations.
Bids opened in Washington for 13 war ships show Bath Iron Works Corp as the lowest bidder for the first group of three destroyers of the 1 850 ton class. The bid totals range from 4 360 000 for three ships with options, to 5 400 000 for one ship with alternates. Completion times are 27 30 and 33 months respectively.
Rotarians from Maine are urged to bring their ladies to the Bath Country Club for the Midsummer Frete opening next Wednesday. All Rotarian golfers and visitors may enter the tournament that afternoon, with an auction and contract party to follow. The Carnival midway, dancing, and dining room will enhance the three day event under full moon illuminations.
Indications point to a highly successful dance at the Country club Friday evening. The event is open to club friends and members with Grindell's orchestra providing music.
