U.S. Geological Survey shows total installed water power capacity for public electricity at 13 807 778 horsepower as of January 1 1930, up 236 244 HP in 1929 but the smallest rise in years. About 800 000 HP is expected to be added in 1930. New England holds 11.9 percent of hydro development, Pacific Coast leads with 24 percent, and the South Atlantic follows at 19.2 percent.
The Maine camp closed on Saturday as boys bade farewell to Portland harbor forts. Attendees reported high spirits and drill proficiency praised by a World War veteran who noted Bath boys should enter training more often. The wife is active with the Universalist Ladies Aid. he belongs to the Sasanoa tribe of Red Men. They have two daughters, Mrs Edward L Gaudreau of Portland and another daughter.
John McNary of Chelsea Massachusetts was unanimously reelected president of the Sabino Improvement Association at the Monday night gathering in Sabine. Edwin W. Haggett and Madelyn Noyes were named officers. Lemont elected trustee for three years. The group plans a field day in August and hosts a members only dance, with the first event set for Saturday night featuring a three piece orchestra.
Joseph A. Jake Aldred Bowdoin class of 1924 has been elected coach of athletics at Brunswick High School. The Bath area resident will begin with football and also practices law in Brunswick. Aldred is known for gridiron, basketball, and baseball talent and his appointment is expected to boost the high school athletic program.
The House approved revisions cutting the statute committee from 12 to four and making the revisor its secretary. A similar change passed the House. Resolutions honoring deaths of Kane Addison Anderson Stuart were adopted, and Hamel’s death noted. Senate adjourned at 10:52 p.m., House followed three minutes later.
Charles N. Lurie editor of the New York Times index is in Bath for a two weeks operation recovery tour of Maine visiting locales and meeting residents during his recuperation trip.
William O. Blinn 75 a native of Woolwich died April 28 in California. He worked for Pacific Fruit Co. from 1907 until his death and was highly regarded by company leadership. A Masonic service, cremation in Oakland, and a committal ritual near his mother’s grave in Riverside cemetery marked the passing. his widow Sophia Wright Blinn plans summer travel visiting Bath Woolwich Augusta and other relatives.
The Bath Salvation Army drive aims to raise 3000 with three solicitors leading the canvass. Mayor Harold P. Small endorses the effort, urging generous support to fund the Army’s spiritual, physical and mental ministry in the community.
A Bath contractor, Merrill, built a cableway by hand to haul timber up a 600 foot incline in Poultney Vermont. Horses, block and tackle, and a heavy mast created the system as the writer witnessed the operation from above. Merrill plans future use of the portable setup.
Donald B. Partridge of Norway Republican nominee for congress from the second district, with his son Junior, spent Friday in Bath meeting supporters before heading to Lincoln and Knox counties. The longtime Oxford county clerk of courts, who won the recent triangular primary, expressed optimism about the campaign outlook.
Miss Evelyn Petlock stenographer for John P Carey and Miss Minnie Brown stenographer for Augustus Perow depart for two weeks. They will spend part of the vacation in Boston and vicinity and in Laconia New Hampshire.
St Mary’s parish lawn party ends after a record turnout with an estimated 120 attendees. Prizes included coal, clothing, quilts, jewelry, and cash gifts totaling several hundred dollars, all donated to the parish Building Fund under Rev. Fr. Timothy Maney and Rev. Fr. Alexander Doucet.
Edward Moran Jr of Rockland Democratic candidate for governor and Albert Beliveau of Rumford candidate for Representative to Congress met with John P Carey Jr and other leading Democrats in the municipal building last Wednesday night. They reviewed the local situation and urged organization as essential. Beliveau may tour the county to confer with leadership though large rallies seem unlikely for now.
A Bath Iron Works joiner from Quincy Mass was arrested in Lewiston on a drunken driving charge. He rode with another Bath man and two Bath girls when stopped on Lisbon road by a Lewiston officer. Police say a half pint of alcohol was found in the car and that he admitted having two drinks after buying the liquor in Bath.
Mr and Mrs Walter Small entertained at 18 Bailey Street with a three table bridge party for Mrs Augustus A Small. Guests included Mrs Annie Eastman of Boston Mrs Dorothy Morse and others. Dorothy Morse won first prize for women a guest towel while S A Small won for men an incense burner.
Members of the West Bath Red Cross branch plan a Friday picnic at the home of Miss Annie Trufant of Trufant’s Crossing. Each member is asked to bring a box lunch. Coffee and punch will be served.
Mrs Frederick E Drake entertained her contract club at luncheon Friday during a visiting period. Guests included Mrs Arthur Sewall Mrs Harry F Morin Miss Mary F Gibbons Miss Anne Kimball Miss Miriam W Kimball and Miss Margaret Cargill of New York City.
Morgan's yacht Corsair completed its Atlantic crossing in a little over eight days. It moved faster each day, reaching the Thames at London by Sunday evening. The vessel will depart again next Thursday for Glen Cove for use by Junius Morgan and family during the Americas voyage.
Seaplane arrival at Aliquippa House, Small Point Harbor, carries Richard Wurtz of Hempstead L I to spend vacation. Other guests include Col. and Mrs. Dodge of Washington and Miss Caroline Walker of Augusta Ga. A dancing party at Bodwell Grange entertained guests from Small Point Beach. A new tennis court will be ready soon with a forthcoming Bath area tournament.
Two Morse high students Ted Delong and John McCarty left Dock Bridge at six AM in McCarty's small row boat. They visited Boothbay Harbor and Southport, rode the Sheepscot river, aided by the tide, and returned to Bath by 5 30 PM. They carried lunch and were tired yet happy from the day’s sights.
The Morse High School class of 1929 will hold its first reunion next Friday evening August 8. They will dine at Westcustogo Inn, attend a dance, and then motor to Portland for a show. Most expenses are covered by the class treasury. Members meet in front of Morse High at 5:30 pm. attendees should leave their names with Miss Sophie Greenblatt and indicate available automobiles.
Frank L. Maguire of Bath and Josephine L. Farnham of Bath were married at Central church parsonage by Rev. David L. Wilson. The groom, son of Thomas H. Maguire of Portland Oregon, works as a guard at the Thomaston State prison. The bride, daughter of Matthew Clark of 653 Middle Street, Bath, is a trained nurse. They will reside in Thomaston after the ceremony.
George J. Stobie explains Maine may establish a private state game farm to raise Mongolian and English ringed neck pheasants imported from Shanghai and England. He notes large egg supplies and potential release in three to five years, with state and private groups funding the effort.
A six month old kitten named Lindy at Arthur's Lunch on Front Street refuses water unless it comes from the gold fish bowl where two gold fish swim. The kitten taps the bowl edge through a window and drinks as the fish nip at Lindy’s snout. The caption notes the close daily stunt and wonders what growth may bring for the fish and cat.
City street department workers applied cold pack on Center and Front streets in the business district where cobbles were roughest and between car tracks. The cold pack treatment proved a vast improvement for automobile drivers.
Fire swept the Wallula, an old Kennebec lake steamer tied near Washington Street. Chief Charlies Parks and Bath Box Co. treasurer Wellington A Moore watched smoke billow as two hose lines fought the blaze along the vessel. The Wallula, one of three steamers that came to Kennebec years ago, remains at the old shipyard awaiting its end.
A new cement roadway in Woolwich opened Thursday morning extends 1.18 miles from the east end of the dike. The route offers a shorter path from Bath to Augusta via Woolwich and Wiscasset, reducing mileage from 43 to 34 and cutting operating costs, with projected toll savings on the bridge.
