Farm population shows increase amid migration and subsistence shifts
U S Department of Agriculture reports 1931 farm population rose to 30 612 000 from 30 000 000, a gain of 648 000. Net farm movement favored countryside in most regions, with 1 472 000 leaving farms for towns and cities and 1 679 000 moving to farms. The report notes a back to the farm impulse for housing relief and subsistence gardening, not a business farming trend, and cites regional movement patterns and revisions based on the 1930 census.
