About 85 percent of an estimated 500 welders and tackers at Bath joined a mass meeting at the State armory to refuse return to work until a committee reports on proposals to settle grievances that halted work last Thursday. The U S S Noa a 2200 ton destroyer named for midshipman Loveman Noa was launched from Bath Iron Works with a ceremony led by Mrs James Cary Jones Jr and attended by Rear Admiral Killipatrick and other officers. Noa born in Chattanooga Tennessee was killed on Samar Island October 26 1901. The vessel is the second Noa built, with the earlier World War I U S S Noa sunk in 1944 after a collision.

Swan Island Past and Present Rich in History and Research
In the Kennebec river between Richmond and Dresden lies Swan Island a 14 mile long 1 mile wide landmass of about 12 000 acres with a storied past. Once a Saxon Indian stronghold it saw forts built by white settlers and later became an unorganized township named Perkins after Colonel Thomas Perkins founder of the Perkins Institute for the Blind. Now state owned the island hosts deer repellant and waterfowl research projects and a deer population of about 75 as it supports ongoing wildlife studies and habitat improvements. The island’s history includes notable figures from Captain John Smith to Jacob Barker and many early settlers.
