Kenneth Vannah, son of Walter Vannah of Dumariscotta, is on furlough from the United States navy. He has traveled to France four times since the war began and once to England, serving aboard transports. He recalls lifeboats near Kranee, crowded streets near the firing lines, and the general hardship yet sustenance he witnessed. He is 19 years old and speaks warmly of his service and experiences.
Portland and nearby women are urged to attend a mass meeting at 28 Bowdoin Street Boston at 6 p m Saturday. Dr Carl M Robinson of Portland will speak on urgent nursing needs his wartime Red Cross base hospital service in France and plans for a summer training camp at Vassar College for registering nurses under national defense. Mrs William S Booth of Cambridge will outline the camp and recruitment chaired by Mrs Robert Payson Cape Elizabeth with enlistment likely at the meeting.
The Bath Red Cross chapter received a gift from St Marys War Relief society which made and supplied 107 slings 104 bandages 10 shirts 17 pairs socks 4d afghans. They plan 25 outfits for Wickes at Bath Iron Works and contributed knitting for Manley. 700 infant garments shipped to a French children hospital core to Mrs Harold M Sewall and Miss Mary Farrell leads the active group.
A Maine bulletin from the Committee on Public Safety chaired by Hon. Harold M. Sewall urges citizens to grasp the war’s gravity and participate actively. It calls for posters, a May 8 statewide war conference in Portland, and food production through home gardens led by women in the state.

Material arrives for a tent city on North Street to produce 200 identical 12 by 16 foot cottages. Promoter Louis Gange says the dwellings will be light and airy and rent at 5.50 dollars per week with ownership after 42 weeks of timely payments. The project aims to house workers and their families and reduce local housing pressure.
The Texas Athletic Association unites Texas Steamship Co. employees and veteran sports figures like Allie Brown Frank Mc Manus and J J Leader. An all star show is planned for May 1 featuring two six round boxing bouts including Dummy Burns a deaf mute facing a Chinaman Ah Chung.
Rev Samuel A Evans of Peoples Baptist church spoke on the Liberty band during a Red Cross entertainment in Richmond Tuesday night. The four act drama Down East was presented and Evans received a great ovation between acts. Mrs William F Dunham chaired the Red Cross drive and helped make the event a success. The chapter expects to realize over 160 from the evening. Cold April may mean warm May.
A Haverhill woman describes hereditary rheumatism worsened by blood weakness. After using Dr Williams Pink Pills she reports relief and improved digestion. The ad promotes the pills as a blood and nerve remedy with a free booklet and mail order availability.
Primary nomination papers filed with the Department of State name Wilbur C. Oliver of Bath Republican for sheriff along with petitions for F. B. Peabody of Richmond M. G. Hall of Topsham George K. Denham of Bowdoinham and 18 to 27 others. Other filings list Charles J. Dain Bath Republican for the House and Edward B. Smith Bath Republican for the House with Rupert H. Baxter Bath 31 others. Additional petitions name William F. Dunham Richmond for register of probate alongside several others. In transport news Tug Portland towed a coal laden barge to Bath for Howard Coal Co and returned with a Potter Transportation Co barge after discharging at Pejepscot Paper Co.
The eighty second birthday of Mrs Susan S Doane widow of Capt Samuel Doane was observed at the Old Folks Home Tuesday noon. A birthday cake with lighted candles was served with slices and ice cream. Mrs Doane received many congratulations during the day. A wartime note mentions Bath homes may stay unpainted due to high labor and stock costs and jobs being postponed for wartime reasons.
Bath residents face gypsy moth nests as warm weather returns. Creosote painting is advised to destroy nests found on trunks, under sidewalks, and behind blinds. State Agriculture crews are inspecting Bath for nests and urge rapid, coordinated action to curb the pest before eggs hatch.
Henry C. Wright formerly of Bath and Mrs. Ernestine S. Hyde widow of John S. Hyde wed on March 23 at St. Luke's chapel Forest Hills Long Island. Wright, a Bath Iron Works draftsman, later joined the Brooklyn Navy Yard. Hyde is daughter of the late Jere Shannon Bath hotelier.
In Bath a caulker named Harold M Heath, once an elevator boy in a Bath bank building, earned 48 to 52 dollars weekly through overtime and Sunday work as part of shipyard related activity. Lincoln lodge Odd Fellows calls members to meet for a drill at the hall Thursday night with the first degree planned for Monday night.
A Bath business man found glass in chocolate peanut bars sold at his shop. After several complaints from children, he broke more bars and uncovered additional shards, reporting the issue with a popular Boston brand confection.
A Bath bound train from the west was delayed about 30 minutes after a rear car on the forward track broke loose and jumped the rails three miles west of Brunswick. No injuries occurred and passengers were moved to another coach. Officials of the Maine Central, including Gen. Mer. Dana C. Douglas and Vice Pres. George S. Hobbs, were aboard en route to Augusta to testify before the Public Utilities Commission.
