Asphalt Washed Ashore In Dead Sea Storms Recovered Locally
A Hebron report states heavy Dead Sea storms brought large amounts of natural asphalt to the western shore. Arabs gather the mineral, selling it in Hebron at 1-2 piasters per kilo. Before the war most asphalt went to Beirut for export, profiting Syrian shippers. Local Palestinian firms include Kremenetzhi Works at Tel Aviv using two tons yearly for battery use and Flasheron Company of Jaffa ready to buy for cork mixing. Imported asphalt costs about 7 NT a ton, cheaper than local mineral, explained as a by product from oil refining.
