Tragic end of the Sarah E Palmer the Bath built schooner
The 1890s Sarah E Palmer, built by Nathaniel T. Palmer, met her end during a Cuba to Philadelphia cargo run when a hurricane cracked her stability. Crew and two Negro sailors perished after the ship rolled and sank near Charleston, while two men survived. Two Brunswick youths hurt in Florida reptile trip
George A. Erswell husband of former West Bath resident Mari on Purington and Ralph Morrell, a Yale Peabody Museum taxidermist, were collecting reptiles in Florida when two accidents cut their trip. Erswell was bitten by a large scorpion and Morrell suffered blood poisoning from falling objects. Morrell recovered after three days in Orlando and travel home to New Haven. Morrell is a son of Mr and Mrs Warren S Morrell of Brunswick. Erswell’s wife is from West Bath and her family—Miles S Purington of West Bath—are mentioned.

Firefighters Suppress Blaze From Smoking Cigarette Toss
Engine 4 failed to roll out at 10 45 Tuesday morning after a still alarm. Firemen stretched 100 feet of hose from hydrant on Water Street and dampened the fire in a recently cleared building site at Water and Elm streets. The blaze was caused by a smouldering cigarette stub.
