Britain Faces Servant Shortage Amid Unemployment

Britain's surplus of unemployed women and girls has created a strange servant shortage in London. American women in the city report difficulty securing cooks or maids, while authorities debate causes. Some argue dole recipients avoid work, accepting meager wages with room and board. Advertisements for domestics flood London papers as the government weighs tightening dole rules and enforcing job seeking proofs. The Salvation Army sent twice as many young women as men overseas last year, seen as positive amid female excess at home.
