Australia vows to ship more meat to Britain despite war strain
Prime Minister John Curtin told Parliament Australia will survey options to increase meat sent to the United Kingdom but warned shipping limits may block extra allocations. He noted Britain’s postwar sugar offer was blocked by lack of ships. Australia’s wartime meat exports dropped from 643 million lbs in 1939 40 to 590 million in 41 42 and to 321 million lbs in 42 43 as ships were diverted to American forces in the Southwest Pacific.

Navy cuts back ship program triggers steel and yard orders drop
The Navy reduced its combat ship program from 84 to 12 vessels triggering mass steel order cancellations and affecting rolling schedules as early as April. The Maritime Commission may cancel or alter orders for 40 tankers, needing about 4,500 tons of steel, half to be built by Sun Shipbuilding. Remaining 12 ships will be built on the Pacific Coast by Kaiser and Todd. The cut is attributed to lower than expected naval losses and was urged by James F Byrnes rather than the Navy itself.
