Arthur G Staples longtime Lewiston Evening Journal editor died Tuesday afternoon. A Bowdoinham native, he spent 57 years at the Journal rising from reporter to editor in chief. Mrs Henry O. Trowbridge won first prize at a tea bridge last Wednesday at White Hall home of Mrs Sumner Sewall to raise funds for Pine Tree Society For Crippled Children. Maine Retail Gains In February Across Independent Stores
Maine independent retailers in 213 stores posted a 5.4 percent February gain over 1939, with year to date sales up 69 percent. Department stores rose 2.5 percent in February and 53 percent for the year. Restaurants led gains at 16.6 percent monthly, followed by motor vehicle dealers and lumber and building materials. Portland up 0.6 percent, Bangor 83 percent, Lewiston 48 percent. Lewiston year to date leads with 88 percent rise.

Joseph Burke, 43, of 103 Main Street Lewiston, opted to serve 60 days in Kennebec County Jail rather than pay a 100 dollar fine plus 12.19 dollars in costs after being found guilty by Judge Gardiner R. Deering in municipal court. Burke pleaded not guilty claiming he had a drink but was not intoxicated. police said he admitted drinking at a local bar. More than 200 attendees gathered at Mohiba Hall in Morse High School gymnasium for the annual Mohiba Ball with Watie Akin and his band providing the music. Patrons included Mayor Robert H.
