Experiments at the Form Est Products Laboratory in Madison Wisconsin show Douglas fir Western yellow pine and Western red cedar posts and poles treated with creosote will last more than twenty years. Other western woods like lodgepole pine and alpine fir show similar results while untreated woods of these species endure two to eleven years.
The article discusses how wood durability depends on quality and types of wood, climate, soil, drainage, cover, sipwoot, heartwood condition, and stand density. It notes poles in very wet or very dry soil sometimes show greater durability, winter on timber can improve durability, and late evidence on how grain or hide affects durability is inconclusive.
