The Big Horn County Bank, pioneer of the Big Horn Basin banks, failed to open last morning due to depleted reserves. State Examiner Stewart Grier took charge, with plans to reopen or consolidate within days. depositors may be paid in full as assets are managed.
The bank reports extended talks toward consolidation with another bank continue in the hope that a receiver appointment can be avoided. Efforts have yielded some response but remain insufficient to justify further continuation.
A Wise family reunion was held last Sunday at Mr. and Mrs. B. C. Wise home. It marked the first gathering of all children in about twenty years with W. G. Wise of Waterloo Iowa and other relatives attending from Cascade Montana Wibaux and Worland.
Next Wednesday afternoon May 24 the club will hold its last meeting before the summer vacation. Election of officers for the ensuing year will take place and a large attendance of the membership is desired.
The Lyceum course finale featured Miss Elarth in a vocal solo and a sequence of readings, dances, and a musical sketch. Performers included Virginia Skovgard, Grace Ellis, Richard Gibson, Gertrude Skovgard, Miriam Ewers, Jerome Devereaux, and Evelyn DeVere in a staged farce and dramatic pieces.
Passenger train No 29 was seven hours late after an oil train derailed five miles east of Bonneville and caught fire. A dead Head engine saved most of the train by pulling away from the fire and the wreck was cleared quickly with little damage.
Worland announces a Sunday May 21 baseball game with Basin Band providing music. Officials promise a fast evenly contested contest and urge fans to attend and support the home team. Admission details to be announced Friday.
The Greybull Valley irrigation district commissioners meet this morning to likely approve the contract for the construction of the Redervolma project at the head of the Grey Bull River.
Dan Galloway reports from the Bonanza field as a water well in Grey Bull sand questions future completions. Ohio well near Grass Creek reaches Embar at 3,600 feet with oil within 60 feet of surface. nearby syndicate plots and regional reorganizations hint at deeper tests and price shifts for Wyoming crude.
Tests on early production show the well averaging better than 120 barrels per hour for 12 hours before shutdown due to limited storage. The Ashland-Wyoming region cannot seal the water in their hole north of town and may drill into the sand and cement the hole if production continues. Status will take several days to determine.
Wm. 8. Bennett Jr., a Denver deputy in the district attorney's office, visited Basin last Saturday to see his father Dr. W. S. Bennett of Greybull. He is considering locating a law office in this region.
Mrs J Scholz leaves Tuesday for the east to meet her husband in Albany. From there they will visit Germany and other European countries this summer.
The first Saturday of the new Boy Scouts troop at the Rock school building marked a busier day than ever as scouts worked four hours each week. They built, repaired, made fly-traps, and planted a garden while planning more four hour work days and a big dinner. Patrols Eagle led by John Hughes and Panther led by Roy Dutton formed, with two more Tenderfoot groups planned. Scoutmaster Losey invites ideas for the promising program and a summer camping trip through the Park.
The Jewell Methodist Sunday School class and Misses Gygax enjoyed a Saturday outing at Antelope Creek. They built a camp fire and shared a lively time as the frogs and pollywogs were chased but not harmed in the playful scene.
Big Horn County promises a larger and better fair than ever with expanded exhibits livestock fruits and ladies department. Community pride and county progress drive preparations as residents anticipate draws crowds from across Wyoming and beyond. News notes strong support from fair workers and a confident outlook for a major annual event.
