Fifty seven men from Big Horn county leave Basin for Petersburg Virginia and Fort Logan Denver. County and Live Wire club meetings prepare them with war duties insurance guidance and support before departure. Band plays as crowds bid the troops farewell at the station and depot.
An evening accident near the depot grade crossing involved James W.y Gould driving an eight cylinder Oldsmobile. He escaped with minor injuries by jumping clear as the train struck the car. A brakeman named Williams was badly bruised and back-wrenched, rushed to Basin hospital for care.
An auto vehicle collided with a train causing the auto to be smashed and the caboose to derail and wreck severely. The injured crew member is under company doctor care and expected to return to work soon.
Karl Botts, who had been working near Thermopolis for weeks, arrived in Basin for a brief visit before leaving for Billings to join the navy. He departed Wednesday afternoon and is likely headed to a naval training school soon. Friends here extend best wishes and hope for his success.
County Clerk Mrs. Zela Murphy reports 105 men have reached majority and registered since the June 1917 registration, with more due by mail. The list of registrants will be published in The Republican next week.
Miss Marie Henry, student at Billings Polytechnic, came back to Basin on Tuesday to spend the summer with her parents Mr and Mrs D C Henry at their home.
President Wilson urged observance of National War Savings Day on June 28 1918. Citizens were asked to pledge to buy two billion dollars in War Savings Stamps and Liberty Bonds to fund the war. Wyoming and Basin committees were urged to begin mobilizing immediately.
President Wilson declared opposition to further prohibition legislation until the food administration deems it necessary to conserve food supplies. The stance was stated in a letter to Senator Sheppard of Texas. A House amendment to the agricultural appropriation bill would block $6,000,000 in funding unless the President approves using grain for producing alcoholic liquors.
A dispatch from Rochester Minnesota dated June 3 1918 reports Blakesley feeling improved and able to walk a little with plans to rise daily. He says he is eating well and grateful for the paper calling it a letter from home and asks to tell all the boys hello.
The sheriff's office detained Chaude Thos Davis after a thorough inquiry and a telegram from Henderson Tennessee identified the suspect as a deserter from the U S Navy. On June 12 the Chamber of Commerce will host Better Horde Day with committees active and volunteers urged to join. next Wednesday is Hotter Roads Day.
A Rex theatre audience hears Private John Faderuck of the 5th U. S. artillery recount his WWI experiences from No Man's Land to the Mexican border. The Siberian-born son urges support: food, men, and money for the war effort as he thanks Wyoming for its welcome. Basins, Wyoming signals hospitality to the young veteran.
Mrs Larrick plans departure in a few days to Fort Sill at Doniphan Oklahoma to stay with her husband Lieut Larrick Most of the household furniture has been sold and the rent packed and shipped and she will be with him most of the time
The Germania and Chamber of Commerce meet to plan road work and a June 12 Better Roads day with merchants closing shops to rake and shovel. A secretary position is debated, Osborn to manage office duties, and funds are allocated for Garden club support and local advertising. The piece also notes a national war ad promising 50 000 sea jobs via Rexall stores and U S Shipping Board training.
A Metropolitan Pharmacy window shows a double page ad from a national weekly, directly linking the war at sea to this area and to the store. The proprietor has a personal stake as the ad relates to the war.
Mrs. D. C. Henry has been ill for several weeks and is slightly better now. It is hoped she will soon be able to get out of bed.
P P Anderson bought the Basin Republican half share from Boyd V Osborn making Anderson sole owner of the Basin newspaper. Osborn had bought the half share from Anderson on January 1 1917 and they worked together to build up the paper. Osborn remains Basin Chamber of Commerce secretary and will stay in Basin to handle the office work.
Miss Ann Scouler RN of Denver Colorado will assist the county demonstrator in June. She will give practical demonstrations on home care of the sick and related subjects. Meetings are planned countywide and promise to be interesting and instructive. Scouler is highly recommended by Washington and can answer questions women may have in home talks. Food conservation has been emphasized but health conservation is timely for the war effort.
Last Sunday a large crowd from Basin gathered at the camping place above the Luman ranch on Paint Rock for a day of fishing and a picnic lunch. A fine catch of trout was reported and many residents attended including Mr. and Mrs. Harry Hime and a list of local families. In the afternoon Mr. and Mrs. Fults visited the camp for a short time.
The report notes U S Marines advance two miles, capture 100 Germans, and Allied lines hold with renewed vigor. Berlin cites 55,000 prisoners while Kaiser rushes fresh divisions. Russia offers concessions to end the war, and Baker seeks funds for aircraft and taxes. Submarine losses rise to 57 dead or missing from the Carolina voyage.
Red Fox Shinbushu and Black Hawk arrived in Basin on their ponies. Red Fox, unable to receive mail, could not lecture at the M E church. He will lecture at the Baptist church Friday night June 7 at p.m. He brings a flag from Secretary of War Baker and will read his letter. He is a noted speaker who had two private interviews with President Wilson and will deliver a patriotic address on war and sing America in Indian tongue.
Pease and Peterson held a weekend open house for their new dry goods store with a white finished interior and indirect lighting. The Basin band entertained attendees as the crowd filled the evening, and the event was considered a success with many interested shoppers.
