Woman Builds Northwest Tunnel in Lieu of Husband
Mrs. Nelson Bennett of Tacoma completed the Nelson Bennett tunnel near Tacoma after her husband Nelson Bennett died mid project. The 0.75 mile long tunnel, 27 feet wide and 28 feet high, cost about 1.2 million dollars and will save rail costs by straightening the route. Mrs Bennett managed payroll, labor relations, and supervision of 300 workers with help from Jesse C. Denny early on and later overseers G. H. Wallace and E. B. L. Hanks, earning praise from railroad officials for finishing ahead of schedule.
