Supreme Court Upholds Wartime Prohibition Powers
The U S Supreme Court by a five to four vote sustains Congress power to ban intoxicating beverages during wartime prohibition under the Volstead enforcement act. Justice Branches writes for the majority while Justices Day Van Devanter Meadors and Clarke dissent. The decisionEs leave little hope for wet advocates though Day in a separate opinion upholds indictments against breweries for pre Volstead beer production. Government briefings follow as Rhode Island and New Jersey cases move forward.
