Basin Chamber of Commerce Reviews Progress on Roads

The Basin Chamber of Commerce held two meetings to discuss better roads and local development. Speakers from Basin and Thermopolis urged improved highways, hotel planning, and intercity cooperation to boost tourism and the Big Horn Basin. The group approved a graveling study and heard praise for campground plans and the Yellowstone highway.

Labor Day Fest Promises Full Day in Greybull

Greybull plans a Labor Day program from 10 30 AM to late night with bucking contests boxing matches tugs of war races and a big evening dance. Basin visitors expected including twenty to thirty cars.

Basin Fire Destroys Ford Car and Barns

Friday night residents of Basin were awakened by the fire alarm to find several barns burning near the Mann hotel. Firefighters quickly contained the blaze, destroying the buildings and a new Ford car owned by Louis Bingin after a nozzle was sabotaged by children playing with the equipment.

Big Horn County Fair Overrides Republican Schedule

The Republican will not publish next week due to the Big Horn County Fair, delaying edition to Saturday September 8th.

Oil News of Week at Basin and Nearby Fields

Oil progress at Basin with Paterson Wyoming Oil Co drilling five miles north of Basin down about 1450 feet and Liberty Oil & Gas Co on the east side of the river near 2300 feet. Prospects center on Greybull sand at ~2800 feet as crews push forward. Local figures include Glen Leidecker traveling to Marietta Ohio and H A Reese and John Bircumshaw back from Kansas Oklahoma trips. Community events cover a parade start at one o'clock, a dance platform at the bell tower site, and plans for an educational exhibit by Allyn H Tedman county agricultural agent to aid farmers.

Ready For Fair Fourth Annual Big Horn County Fair Opens

Preparations for Basin’s Fourth Annual Big Horn County Fair are complete. Exhibitors bring entries while county residents visit. The Chamber of Commerce runs the parade and nightly dances. Promoters expect the largest crowd yet and praise local merchants and organizations for backing the event. Notable support comes from sugar companies offering prizes and arrangements for special trains from Thermopolis and Lovell. Nearly all stalls and boxes are sold and street concessions are set to operate.

Four Minute Men Organized Here to Promote War Talks

At R. B. West's office a Four Minute Men group formed to deliver brief four minute public talks at picture shows and events on national issues. W. F. Moor elected chairman, with Rev. Jones, Thos. Hyde, E. J. Sullivan, J. A. Berry, and Dr. Mark H. Smith scheduled to speak on topics from why the U S is in the war to food conservation and civilian roles. A roster of local supporters attended the Tuesday meeting and more volunteers offered.

Visiting at West Home From Wyoming Neb

C. C. West from Wyoming Nebraska is visiting at the home of his brother R. B. West. He is accompanied by his daughter Lillian and arrived Tuesday. They plan to stay several days and look over the country.

Basin Basin Basin Schools Face Space Strain With Additions Planned

School opens September 3 in town and at Orchard Beach, with Basin Gardens on September 10. Principal Anna M. Michaelson notes high and elementary staff, including Helen M. Anderson and Nellie Huff, while Basin’s growing population necessitates wagon support and an upcoming building addition to relieve crowded classrooms.

Big Horn county trustees to meet in Basin on September 6

Trustees of Big Horn county schools will gather at Basin fair grounds on September 6. J O Creager, noted Wyoming educator, will assist in organizing and explaining county wide textbook standardization. On September 5 at 10 30 a educational exhibit will be shown with Ivan Hobbs lecturing.

Newport Couple Return From Auto Tour of Wyoming and Nearby States

Rev and Mrs M F Newport came back Saturday after a vacation spent touring the state by auto. They stopped in Billings and visited Sheridan Casper Cheyenne Bates Park Sunrise Fort Laramie Gurnsey and Thermopolis.
