Col W H May leads preparations for the Big Horn county fair on Sept 6 7 8 with grounds and buildings improving for large exhibits. Strong crops promise bigger displays and enhanced livestock shows as prizes expand and amusements aim for top quality drawing countywide attendance.
President Harding names Edgar T. Conquest and James D. Gallup as Registers of the United States land offices. James D. Gallup, longtime Wyoming official and veteran, will succeed Hayden M. White at Buffalo. Gallup, born in Corydon Iowa, served in the Spanish War and rose from chief clerk to receiver. He is praised for training, experience, and unblemished record.
Mrs W H Tomer and her children arrived home last Saturday from Montana where they had been seeking the husband without success. Mrs Tomer faced destitute circumstances after the prolonged search and separation.
Hearing before District Court Commissioner J R Bonwell found Eva and Catherine Tomer incorrigible. W G Harris state humane officer sent the girls to the Florence Crittenden home in Denver along with two Marks children. Mrs Tomer to care for the remaining younger children.
Heavy slide at Five Mile Creek damaged the Big Horn Canal causing an estimated loss of four to five thousand dollars. A temporary bypass will bring water down by Sunday, but full repairs will take some time.
Three army trucks twenty five automobiles and innumerable trailers reached Chicago on the Brooklyn to Buhl Idaho caravan. The thirty families traveling carry forty acres each of alfalfa land awaiting them.
The fair association reports strong response to the Better Babies contest. Dr. M H Smith of Basin handles inquiries and registrations, while Mr. and Mrs. T W Spratt loan a residence for trials. Dr. J D Lewellen of Powell and Prof. McNown join the contest staff as judge and scoring chair respectively. The event, set for September six, promises cooperative effort and welfare for children.
YT. V. Quick of Davenport Iowa arrived for a visit with Mrs. A. B Moore. He travels with Mrs. Mary Quick and plans a brief Powell visit before returning home. Mr Quick is 62 and active for his age.
US crude oil production for the first half of 1921 reached about 236,675,000 barrels while consumption totaled 269,721,000 barrels. Imports increased, exports rose, and stocks grew, with daily production rising week to week. The report notes a surplus driven by imports, ongoing exploration, and new drilling activity across Wyoming, Montana, North Dakota, and other fields.
Basin, famed as the valley’s prettiest stop, faces an invasion of weeds clogging streets and ditches. A town welfare committee urges residents to curb growth, noting a few hours effort could restore Basin’s charm for visitors and residents alike. The Chamber and Booth Beach Woman's Club report a productive meeting with forty attendees.
The Modern Caravan committee met in Chamber of Commerce rooms to arrange entertainment for the caravan due in August. They will escort the group from Thermopolis and provide local vegetables, set up an agricultural exhibit, host talks and music, and sponsor a free dance. Sub committees include Exhibits, Ladies, and Entertainment volunteers.
Speakers include A W Coons R B Weat and J R Bonwell at the banquet with Harry L Wise and R J Tilton. Music by Prof F L McNown Exhibit Booth by B P Wigton and A B Martin. The committee will gather before the caravan arrives to announce full welcome plans. Donors urged to supply locally grown vegetables and fruits for a meal from home gardens and notify Harry Wise.
Wm Rannells of Plant Rock visited town early this week and told fair board secretary May he would display minerals at this year’s fair. He has prospected extensively in the Big Horns and can assemble an exhibit that should attract strong interest.
State agronomist T. S. Parsons and County Agent McDaniels will tour local potato and alfalfa fields today to certify them for seed production.
The autumn term opened August 1 with Judge P W Metz presiding. The term features many cases including Pete Silva sentenced to five years for assault with intent to commit rape. Divorces granted, estates settled, receivers appointed, guardians named, and numerous drainage and probate matters heard for review.
Cards received announcing the birth of a son, Donald Howard, to Mr. and Mrs. B. R. Dawson at Ban Louis Obispo California. Mr. Dawson is a nephew of Mrs. B. F. Wickwire and was an under sheriff in the county until recently. Ed Miller visited in Urey bull Tuesday.
A call to citizens to join and actively support local chambers of commerce. Emphasizes cooperation with city government, collective effort, and focusing on public good to boost production, business, and quality of life. (Continued on page four)
Directors discussed marketing problems and decided to send a representative to Casper to arrange disposal of surplus garden crops. If successful a market will be provided for garden produce poultry and potatoes and a buying agent will operate here. Small home garden surpluses could be sold for cash at market prices competitive with Denver.
John Rhodes bought the Genoa Wyoming Oil Co camp near Torchlight and found a large capacity moonshine still with a cooling system in the cabin. Sheriff Wickwire recovered the apparatus. A stove left by the oil company suggests the site was used for illicit liquor production. lack of water required transporting all equipment to the remote location.
