Fragmented reflections on values and manners from a 19th century column
A disparate set of aphorisms and observations touches on hope, merit, truth, luck, chores, ancestry, fashion, and social behavior. The piece weaves casual maxims about medals, horseracing tips, boyhood duties, gratitude to ancestors, and fashion in a reflective, opinionated tone.

Saving Stock Hoga Vaccination Boosts Market Flow
Hog cholera no longer blocks stock hog movement in public markets. About 12 400 healthy but unfit hogs were vaccinated at South St Joseph yards between August 1 1913 and May 1 1914 and sent to feeders. The practice’s success promises wider use in Missouri markets as federal and state efforts begin a $500 000 hog cholera prevention program across twelve states. Reference to earlier 1902 quarantine and subsequent waste shows the shift toward vaccination and sanitation with local leadership and farmer cooperation.
