Seven Hundred Attend Old Timers Picnic at Booths Grove

The Old Timers picnic at Booths Grove near Hyattville drew 700 plus attendees and 150 autos from Big Horn County on July 29. Notables including Tom Marshall and Robert Carey spoke while Basin’s band and local dancers provided entertainment into the night.

Government Takes Over Telephones

Washington reports the post office department has assumed possession and control of the nations telephone and telegraph systems. A special Burleson committee will supervise operations while companies run normally, with salaries unchanged and a push to coordinate services for public and shareholder benefit.

Recruiting Convention Brings British United States Enlistment

The July 31 recruiting convention between Great Britain and the United States begins and a sixty day period grants British subjects exemption from the American draft. Lt J M Donaldson directs the British Canadian recruiting stations in Great Falls Montana and depots in Butte Basin and coordinates offer to enlist regardless of prior U S citizenship status. The window runs until September 28 and enables enlistment at any British Canadian recruiting post.

Slacker suspects nabbed as sheriff’s office reports

Malcolm Moore, who stole T. J. Jones' team, was sent to Worland Industrial School until age twenty one. J. T. Hill remains in custody on grand larceny charges. Bay City’s Tutfleld Talbot tied to slacker arrest. Vincent Ward Boise. Chas Rogers admitted slacker status. Dan Drake Booneville and Marshall Elwell Maine also linked to slacker cases. Greybull Returns Crown Prince Celebration in Basin

Crowds from Greybull and Basin joined Friday afternoon in Basin to celebrate a crown prince capture. The Basin courthouse hosted patriotic addresses from leading speakers while visitors from Germania, Burlington and Otto joined a parade by the Basin band before returning home eager for more excitement.

No German Taught In Basin Schools

Discussion on German instruction in Basin public schools led to a March bond meeting motion by C A Zaring to abolish German teaching. It is understood German will not be taught in Basin schools. Attorney Zaring returned from Cheyenne after attending the Frontier celebration and legal matters.

Oil business visitors tour Big Horn County

J. C. Rubel and wife from Bartletts ville Oklahoma visited Basin this week. Rubel works in Oklahoma oil contracting and planned a trip after hearing about Big Horn County oil prospects. J. F. Ray of Buffalo Basin also visited town on Thursday representing the Texas Oil Co.

Olsen family returns to Basin after Midwest trip

L. W. Olsen and family came back to Basin from St. Paul Minnesota and Wisconsin last Friday. He had visited his ailing mother Mra. M. D. Olsen two weeks ago. Olsen reports good crop conditions in Minnesota and Wisconsin predicting bumper crops this year. James O Neil displayed what may be Basin s biggest tomato yet, boasting a garden to be proud of.
