County Commissioners begin modest steps to beautify the court house square, the first public spending on the site. The town provided water and trees, with gulch irrigation conduits costing about 5,000 dollars. Proposals include planting grass and flowers, creating walks, and maintaining the area as a premier local showplace.
Entertained at dinner in Markham House Tuesday evening County and Prosecuting Attorney R B West entertained the Big Horn county bar along with visiting attorneys. L. P. Nelson of the Nowood shipped a car load of horses to Laurel last Tuesday from Manderson, the transfer marking a notable livestock movement through the area.
Sheriff Wickwire investigates sheep theft near Spence. About 117 head taken with 20 unaccounted. Guy and Leo Spence, ages 17 and 19, charged with larceny. The youths were arrested, arraigned before Justice Lampman, and bound over to district court in $600 bonds each.
A large attendance at the Progress dinner in Basin with J B Thompson presiding. Members discussed a forthcoming Hyattville meeting on July 4 and highway issues, plus a drainage concern along the river and potential formation of a drainage district. Visitors from Indiana and Cody praised Basin and pledged support for local progress. A Titanic safety resolutions committee was formed and adjournment followed no further business.
General Manager Holdrege of the Burlington states that all fruita graiin grasses and soil products exhibited at the state fair will be hauled free. The only requirement is that the secretary of the fair certify that the exhibits have been made.
J E Wilson special agent for the Wyoming Life Insurance company arrives this week to begin writing policies in the Basin region. He expects to appoint local agents soon and aims for active start after printers delayed prior setup. The firm offers safe attractive policies and has broad capital and statewide stockholders. C A Evans named district manager for Cody oversees Big Horn Park Washakie and Hot Springs counties.
The Five Hundred club met Wednesday evening at Mr. and Mrs. F. A. Wise home. Rooms were tastefully decorated and refreshments served. All members enjoyed the evening. Honors went to Mrs. Ruth Donaldson and Neal Anderson.
Oregon favors Theodore Roosevelt for president with Woodrow Wilson as the Democratic pick. Ben Selling of Portland is the Republican senate nominee. Democratic nomination contested between Dr Harry Lane and O P Coshow. Nebraska results show Roosevelt carrying the presidential primary by a large margin with Clark favored by Democrats in multiple districts. Wilson trails. Western and midwest returns indicate Roosevelt strength across six Nebraska districts while Harmon fades.
A large audience attended the Woman's Club at the library. Members with delinquent dues were warned they cannot vote in the upcoming annual officer elections. A May Day dance is set for next Tuesday at Fraternity hall with Smith Brothers Orchestra providing music. The dance committee includes Mrs. T. M. Hyde, Mrs. H. Armeling, Mrs. S. H. Smith, Mrs. A. W. Coons, and Mrs. C. W. Atherly. The Wednesday program featured piano and vocal solos, readings, and duets. Several locals, including O. Neff and J. R. McNiven, were in town yesterday for court.
A joint civic committee from the Woman's Club and Progress Association met at Carnegie Library to plan cleanup day on May 4 and to propose a town ordinance requiring residents to keep premises clean. They also discussed appointing a city scavenger and weekly garbage removal contracts, with committees named to urge council action, engage schools, and involve Boy Scouts.

A Woman's club whist party in the library rooms celebrated May pole decorations in sweet pea colors. The April Fool’s tally cards drew laughs as the Brary piano fund gained several dollars. Active committee members included Mesdames Snow Harris Smith Hyde and more, with many members donating refreshments and table provisions.
Mr. and Mrs. Ira H. Prisby departed Monday for The Dalles Oregon. They will spend the next month or six weeks visiting relatives and touring the area.
