The Maintenance of Way Department on the Arizona Division held its second annual barbecue near the Harvey House. T O Carter cooked beef for hundreds, Mexican boys band played, a 5 inning baseball game ended 4 to 3 for Bridge Building. The Fat Man race saw Ben Gouldin outrun Al Ray. An evening dance at the Rose Inn ended the celebration. Mrs George Drumm has been ill.
Barstow Woman's Club outlines a full year with noted speakers. Opening meeting is October 9 at 2 30 at Mrs E L White's home. Subsequent meetings plan to be held in the Congregational Church basement. The year book promises a splendid program. Club flower is the desert lily and colors are blue and gold. Meetings are at 2 30 on the second and fourth Tuesdays. Mrs Charley Garver serves as president.
Barstow Chamber of Commerce directors met at the Melrose hotel. E. L. White chaired, with Harvey Mosier, H. L. Miller, Miss Waterman, A A True, H Manson, L J Henderson, A L Doran and W H Sides present. Discussion covered the proposed public airport, sewerage, garbage disposal, and progress in ending the milk war with plans for a dairy creamery corporation.
The Agricultural Legislative Committee of California represents 75,000 farmers and 37 cooperatives, with $200 million in annual business, pushing Proposition No 1 for legislative parity between producing areas and urban districts. Executive Secretary Ralph H. Taylor urged unity with farm groups and strong support for a Yes vote before the November election.
Local Barstow readers are urged to study three state bond propositions on November 6. The notice outlines bond totals, purposes for Olympiad and park bonds, a state railroad grade separation fund, and cautions voters to weigh costs against benefits before casting ballots. It stresses citizen responsibility to know facts and persuade others to vote yes or no.
Alonzo DeWitt of San Bernardino father of Mrs. J E Harris of Barstow died after a paralyetic stroke. The pioneer and Woodman of the World member aged seventy was interred at Mountain View cemetery with funeral services led by the Woodman of the World and Pioneers Club. He leaves a widow Mrs F O DeWitt and five children, including two daughters and three sons all of San Bernardino.
Mrs Benedict Mrs Hopping Mrs Tom McCue and Mrs Bagby shared hosting duties at Mrs Bagby 556 Winston Ave San Marino for Barstow residents and former desert dwellers. A five course luncheon followed by bridge, with blue and gold decorations and gift pencils. Prizes went to Mary Craig and others as the Desert Clan members enjoyed the gathering.
Contractors visited the National Old Trails highway site from Daggett to near Hector about 25 miles east. Bids will be opened in Sacramento next Wednesday. The group included George E. MacVicar and Ken Hodgeman. Estimated cost exceeds $800,000. The project is first of two units in a reconstruction and realignment plan. About $510,000 from state gasoline tax funds is appropriated. The new road will cross Santa Fe and Union Pacific tracks at Daggett and Minneola be eliminated. the road will be 20 feet wide with shoulders.
Wallace Miller, manager, presided at a formal tea and preview for the Durant Hotel in Berkeley. The Durant offers 80 rooms, with an annex project adding 60 more. Miller returned here after a stint away and is cited as a capable manager. his wife Mrs. Miller is noted as missed in Barstow.
Alfalfa seed can be produced in the Hinkley district as shown by three growers from the Hinkley Farm center. Twenty six acres yielded good seed this season with an estimated 500 pounds per acre, and the field demonstrated on September 18 at H C Bailey’s ranch.
Hemet Valley alfalfa seed buyers and growers anticipate a rich harvest as prices soar from 15 to 20 cents per pound, the strongest market in 10 years. Local growers expect about 750,000 pounds, with three buyers dominating the scene: J. C. Loomis, G. C. Disney, and Frank True.
