Palliser Farmer Emerson Visits Barstow Mine District
L S Emerson, a successful Palliser farmer and mining man, visited Barstow today. At Gold Ridge mine, formerly Fortuna, 22 miles east of Old Woman spring, mill and machinery are installed. Several hundred feet of work, two tunnels from the 300 ft level. Emerson holds 88 claims in five bunches with partners Smith and Marrow operating in the district.

STARTS TOURING COUNTRY TOY PISTOL FOR PROTECTION
Special officer Grant Tucker recounted a night protecting Santa Fe property when he boarded a freight train and found a concealed weapon. It was a loaded toy cap pistol. The youth claimed he frightened two black men with it. He was later sent to San Bernardino for treatment of his upper story.

High and Grammar School Faculties Entertained
Last Saturday evening Miss Pax ton and Miss Helseth hosted the High School and grammar school faculties. Progressive five hundred was played, prizes awarded, and ice cream and cake served as new teachers shared settling-in experiences. Guests praised the pleasant gathering and hoped for similar parties later in the year.

Several new students have entered since last week and a larger number of boys than girls. The PTA hosts a reception for teachers Friday at the Auditorium to welcome them. Mr Crain teaches thirty one in Spanish 1 a record first year class. Ruth Burden returned after a six week motor trip with her parents. Students explore musical instrument lessons with new cornet and trombone players. The school adds a piano for growing enrollments. Athletic classes and glee clubs begin. Senior class photo for 1924 will be hung in the office. The 1928 freshmen plan initiation on Oct 8. Biology offers specimen hunts and an aquarium project. Elinor Funk becomes a university student after passing exams. Adah Flenniken enjoyed a three month east trip with her grandfather. Basketball for boys continues at noon with 85 plus candidates. Transfers were sent for Eva Danielson to Compton Union, Robert Woods to Absarokee, Fern West to San Bernardino, Niagara unable to return.
