Gunfight Ends in Justifiable Homicide at Harvey House
Deputy Sheriff W J Thompson killed Deputy U S Marshal W H Middaugh after Middaugh drew a pistol during a late night disturbance on the Harvey House platform. The two exchanged shots. Middaugh was slain, Thompson firing blanks first, then a live round. Middaugh, 50, of Los Angeles, left a wife at 854 E 24th St. Coroner’s inquest ruled justifiable homicide with Thompson exonerated.

A Santa Fe guard at Newberry pumping station, Earl F. Britton, says he shot telegraph operator G C Todd in self defense after a dispute over gambling losses totaling about 181.70 dollars. Todd died later at Santa Fe Hospital after being brought to Barstow for care.
