Barstow area notes mining and agriculture generate hundreds of millions in Mojave River Valley wealth with mineral products possibly outweighing farming. Borax gold silver copper potash and more are showcased. samples invited at Barstow Museum.
Barstow Grammar School opened with 277 students, up from 274 last year, reaching 303 by Wednesday. The faculty changes include new assignments for Miss Garrett, Mrs White, Miss Millett, and others. Mrs Sarah Ralph acts as attendance officer and county nurse, enforcing work permits for working children. A teachers meeting is scheduled Saturday in the auditorium with Mrs Gladys Potter leading as Assistant Superintendent.
Maintenance of way picnics set for Barstow Station Grove on September 22 and San Bernardino on September 30. The events promise a mix of business and pleasure with a barbecue cited as a highlight and value for attendees.
R E Thames, a local switchman, is hospitalized with a dislocated shoulder after a sedan rollover while attempting to pass a school bus. Mary Cashman and Myrtle Williams suffer ankle sprains and minor cuts. Jessie Boone escapes uninjured. The group was riding in Thames chevy sedan. another car’s right of way caused the crash as gravel loosened under brakes. Dr. John A. Graham transported three injured to Victorville hospital.
The Barstow Mexican Colony invites Americans to a Sunday dance at the Rose Inn as part of its Independence Day commemoration on September 16. A public meeting with speeches singing and orchestra is planned for Saturday night in the grammar school auditorium, followed by a parade led by the Mexican band and an evening dance.
Railroads face profit cuts from highways autos and air travel while burros and wild horses head to coast towns for chicken feed. A toy earthquake near Barstow awakens dreamers as Daggett inspectors chase varmint bottles, yet the inspectors are described as deaf and dumb and do not drink.

Mr and Mrs EB Pitcher returned from a business trip to Los Angeles. Mrs Lillian Jones was a business visitor in Los Angeles this weekend. Alfred Henderson and Homer Martin are on an eastern motor trip passing Albuquerque where they met R R Burke formerly of Barstow. Everett Mortensen, son of Mr and Mrs Prior Mortensen, is building a fine aeroplane model with engineer Waite.
Mr and Mrs E L Stanfield and friends from Big Bear Valley spent a short time in town Saturday evening and later attended the 49 dance at Victorville.
Mr and Mrs Harry Kelly and their family ended a three month vacation in Oregon visiting the Jim Burn side family formerly of Barstow and traveled as far north as Vancouver.
Eleven year old Raymond Tumblin son of Mr and Mrs Wm Tumblin will return home this Saturday from St Vincent hospital in Los Angeles where he has been for a week with a severe influenza illness.
Conductor and Mrs. R. D. Munn of Bakersfield have moved here and have taken up residence in the W. F. Erwin house.
Miss Bernice White departs Thursday to Los Angeles to resume her college course at the University of California Southern branch, continuing her studies after a pause.
Mrs Esther Williams of Hodge school reports 23 pupils enrolled this year with 5 to 6 more expected. Last year there were 20 enrolled. Mr Randall drives the school bus.
Charles Whitney, son of L P Whitney of the Whit ney auto electric shop, has become a Barstow resident and is now employed alongside his father.
Leo Kneezer and family enjoyed a weekend in Pasadena watching aerial stunts above the city. He urged locals and visitors around Los Angeles to not miss the aviation show as aviation enthusiasts flock to the event this week.
Agent Whitlow reports nine green fruit trains moved through Barstow on Sunday. Seven trains came from the north and two from the south. The trains averaged sixty cars each and were mostly loaded with grapes.
R. H. Gibson the Santa Fe lead electrician based in Los Angeles was in Barstow last weekend supervising construction at Trainmaster Heubert’s residence. Heubert family to move to company house No. 6 on Williams Street.
Margie Spear Gibbs stays with Mr and Mrs Warner this week while Mr and Mrs Bert Gibbs travel from San Bernardino to visit friends. Margie plans to return to San Bernardino high school for her senior year this fall.
Mack Rizzardini came back Saturday night from a months long vacation visiting his birthplace Cape Cod and New York City. He traveled with Al Kinsey and Julian Smith to Kansas City where he split from Kinsey and Smith who have not yet returned from their trip.
Dr Bruton of England visiting Barstow was hosted by Dr Robert White. Bruton who has spent months in Newfoundland directs elementary schools in England and said American schools are architecturally superior. He toured the local high school and complimented the town on its fine school.
The Inglewood Chamber of Commerce discussed creating a government reserve to protect fossils north of town from theft, citing eastern museums collecting specimens. Barstow and Barstow area towns plan Ashfork signage. Dairies urged to end the milk war with fair prices. Flood control along the river east of Barstow completed at about $1000. The board considered aid for those hurt by the milk war and ways to resolve the dispute.
Walter Mosely a thirteen year old colored boy from Chicago was found at Victorville after jumping a Union Pacific train. Barstow officers alerted a Victorville constable who retrieved the boy. The Associated Charities of Oakland had bought his ticket but he fled at Bakersfield twice. his third attempt failed. He told Officer Harris his stepfather was mean and he refused to return.
Mrs Forst Dillingham and her children returned Wednesday night from Los Angeles where they spent the summer.

Mrs. B L Berdeau of Long Beach spent a week with her aunt Mrs. Pence and returned home on Tuesday.
Mr and Mrs George Deskins returned this week from a two week vacation. They spent two weeks at Crest Line in the San Bernardino mountains and one week at the beach.
Mrs John Chamber of Pearson Nash Company San Bernardino reports the sale of a Nash advance six to Harry Addison.
George Cunningham has a new garage built this week by Chas Brass and Mr King. Lubin Henderson is constructing a garage for Ray Smith behind the barber shop, reflecting local trades active in the area.
Mrs Chas Brass, who taught in the local high school the past few years, began teaching at Ocean Side high school this Monday, marking a new assignment and continued service in the district.
Mr and Mrs La Marsh with Mr and Mrs B Page drove to Long Beach on Monday and returned home Wednesday night.
L Miller and Frank Butts traveled to Los Angeles this week to attend the city’s air races, joining spectators and noting event highlights amid the year’s aviation showcase.
Dr. L. Benson is in Los Angeles this week relieving Dr. Rogers who operates from the May Company building as physician for the store. For several years Dr. Benson has filled in during Dr. Rogers summer vacations.
Minneola News reports the school began Monday with Miss Mary Lewis of Redlands as teacher. She is a Redlands University graduate and will reside at Cliff House, Newberry Springs. The schoolhouse has been enlarged and painted. Sunday school starts next Sunday the 16th at 10 A.M. led by Mr. John Boucher with classes for children and adults. all welcome.
Barstow Union High School opened September 10 with 109 pupils the largest enrollment in school history. Seniors 17 juniors 16 sophomores 32 freshmen 86 plus eight graduates in post graduate work. Faculty includes four with Master of Arts degrees. New staff include Mr P H Hurst principal and chemistry teacher Miss Spight teaches Spanish and Girls Athletics Miss Lyn music and home economics. Drawing new department adds interest.
Bud Dillingham has left to attend college in Pasadena and is living at the YMCA.
Ludlow merchant Thos Murphy was a Barstow visitor this evening while returning home from Los Angeles. He left Barstow about eight o clock for his hometown.
Ben Zentmire leaves Sunday for El Paso Texas on a ten day vacation trip. Mrs Zentmire who has been visiting in the east will join her husband in El Paso and return home with him.
