A British transport carrying 1933 American troops and 70 officers was sunk by a German submarine off England. Four destroyers depth charged the sub, destroying it. debris and bodies surfaced. Twenty stokers died, rest of crew saved, ships had containment of a rest camp for the landed soldiers.
American forces in France push forward under heavy artillery and breach German entrenchments to gain ground east of the Revillon Glennes road. Prisoners taken and machine guns captured mark progress, though German nests remain on high ground northeast of Mervil and Little Mountain. The ridge’s fortifications complicate frontal assault, but a turn-and-evacuate outcome appears likely.
London dispatch dated Sept 11 reports British and French forces advancing toward the Hun base at St Quentin after repelling strong resistance. British lines near Attilly and Vermand push within three miles of the city as heavy bombardment continues on St Quentin. Mrs J J Harris and daughter Kate after a few days visit at the home of Officer Harris in Barstow returned to San Bernardino. Mrs Gillett and children finish a pleasant outing at Hermosa Beach and returned home Tuesday.
The notice directs all young men planning fall college attendance to matriculate and enroll as regular students. After registration day, likely around October first, regularly enrolled students will be inducted into the Students Army Training Corps at their schools under the Selective Service Act rather than enlistment.
