Mojave River Land & Water Co drills a 185 ft well with 20 ft water, plans to reach 400 ft. Artesian water near Tom Williams borax mine soon. Arthur Bull's family travels to Los Angeles for well work at Manix, while Tom Williams expands rig fleet for future contracts. Cactus planting, teacher postings, and land sales show Otis growth as residents and investors participate.

Barstow plus Barstow Needles Santa Fe trains Nos. 7 and 8 run between Barstow and Needles. F D Baker and daughter from Dunbar arrived in Barstow and will build a new Catholic church. Mrs L J Henderson was in Los Angeles and San Bernardino over the weekend. Ruth Zentz visited Verde Haws at the Haws ranch. Chas Scully now at Crozier Canyon where pears and peaches grow. Mrs H W Slaght called back to Barstow due to her husband’s illness. J J Nolan of Needles spent the weekend with S P Marker. Ed Marker of Idaho Falls visiting S P Marker family. Jas Halbert, secretary to Mr Jacobson of the Harvey System, visited Barstow. Mrs L J Henderson and family depart for San Bernardino for winter. S P Marker spent Sunday in Needles building car sheds. W J Kelley of Holmes Supply Co left for 30 days vacation in Nebraska. Engineer S J Wallace left for extended eastern tour for several months. Wm H Murray and wife visited Los Angeles, saw the circus and shopped. Ben Hemnus doing assessment work on the Piper group east of the Dewey Mines for Henry Mountain. J C Osburn and friends from Los Angeles visited Barstow to view property. further development may follow.

Mrs. S. A. Evans Dies After Goitre Operation

Mrs. Sarah A. Evans, 37, died after going to Rochester Minnesota on August 26 for a goitre operation. She leaves husband William J. Evans and two sons Elliott and Joseph Jr. The body will be moved to Cleveland Ohio for interment. Elliott oversees the printer during the father's absence.

Santa Fe Company Adds Agricultural Demonstrator

The Santa Fe Company now employs an agricultural demonstrator to assist farmers with all branches of agriculture. He will contact prospective settlers and provide free information and aid on request, using demonstrations on farmers' land. Applications for information should be directed to G. D. Hutchison, Agent, Barstow.

California Magnesite Industry Faces Idle Mines and Offshore Prospects

A USGS inquiry finds numerous California magnesite deposits idle last year. Producers expect openings after the Panama Canal to enable profitable sea shipment. California output 1912 was 10,512 tons valued at $105,120. 1911 output 9,375 tons valued at $75,000.
