New Farm Advisor Named for San Bernardino County

Herbert T Wilder will serve as farm adviser for San Bernardino County beginning November 15. A soil expert, he has worked with the U S Department of Agriculture since 1901, including the bureau of soils in Washington and later the extension service. Born in Massachusetts, he is an alumnus of Phillips Andover and Harvard. Farm Bureau officials praise the appointment as a worthy successor to Dr Fox.

General Strike Threat Looms Over U S Railways

Chicago reports half a million railroad workers ordered to strike October 30 with two million more unions contemplating a general walkout the same date. Unions cited include Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen and Locomotive Firemen and Enginemen among others. The Railroad Labor Board urged immediate wage reductions be translated into lower freight rates to avert a strike and help reduce living costs.

Famous Busby Minstrels Bring Comedy to Barstow

The Famous Busby Minstrels led by Manzy Campbell and Lessas Brown, described as natural comedians, perform one show in Barstow on Friday October 21. Traveling in a Pullman palace car, the 40 colored artists tour principal cities and towns, with press praise suggesting strong reception.

Barstow High Makes Progress On Courts And Now Plans Game

Barstow Union High notes Saturday October 14 as a red letter day for Barstow High with work on tennis and basketball courts. After sprinkling and rolling the courts are in fairly good condition though the tennis court needs more work and one basketball court will require significant effort. A Friday assembly featured a basketball game between the Athenians and Romans, won 15 to 11 by the Athenians with strong school spirit shown by supporters. A league game is planned for Saturday October 22 at Victorville against Perris Union High and Victorville, with Barstow to play in the afternoon. On October 15 a Seniors dance lit by gold and white colors and lively music fostered pep and good times, with hopes for future dances to match its success.

Concow Valley Dam Planned Near Oroville

The Concow Valley dam near Oroville will be built next spring to irrigate about 10,000 acres. Local officials project improved water supply and agricultural prospects for the region.

D. W. Bisbee dies in Randsburg shaft accident

Obituary notes the death of De Witt W. Bisbee in a fall 385 feet to a shaft bottom at the old Mells shaft pump station in Randsburg. A pioneering mining engineer and entrepreneur, Bisbee built a career in Mexico and California, helped found The Southwest Engineering Co., and led copper mining ventures in Revenue Canyon before moving to Randsburg. He is remembered as honest and generous, with a note on trust and betrayal in his later life.

Shea’s Contract Work Under Way On Summit Victorville Road

State Highway work led by R. T. Shea begins grading for a 15.7 mile bituminous macadam road from Summit to Victorville. W. E. Hall of Shea & Company will oversee operations. Contract price is 226000 dollars, rock and asphaltum supplied by the state. Completion aimed in about ten months.

Power company authorized to issue bonds for extensions

The Southern Sierras Power Company was authorized by the Railroad Commission October 15 to issue and sell at not less than 85 percent of face value plus accrued interest 580 608.32 of its first and refunding mortgage six per cent Series B bonds. Proceeds will finance part of extensions and betterments.
