Samuel L. Tripp, 80, died Thursday Oct 11 while sitting in a chair at his son E J Tripp’s home in Barstow California He was born in Morrow County Ohio and lived in the San Joaquin Valley 22 years before moving to Barstow a couple weeks before Christmas Funeral services were held at First Baptist Church Barstow Undertaking Parlors cared for the remains and he was buried in the local cemetery.
Roy Williams was brought to the county jail from Yermo by Constable Tom Williams on grand theft charges. He allegedly stole a car from William Aguiler in Riverside Monday at 10 AM and was arrested near Yermo by 4 PM after Riverside officers broadcast a description to Sheriff Walter A. Shay.
Ernest Thompson, eldest son of D E Thompson of Minneola, accidentally shot his leg while cleaning a gun on Monday afternoon. Bullets passed through the leg above the knee and lodged in the calf. He and his parents took him to a San Bernardino hospital that night where the bullet was removed.
Miss Dorothy Steinberg and her mother spent the weekend in Los Angeles. Mr and Mrs Eddy Evans were recent visitors in Los Angeles. E W Best of Yermo bought a new Chevrolet from Central Garage Sunday. Barton Witty visited Barstow this week. Mrs Tennie McKinnon enjoyed air races in San Bernardino. Mr and Mrs Robert Tait reside in Barstow at R L Teague's home. Tait works at the roundhouse. Mr and Mrs L J Henderson are in Los Angeles this week. H L Miller returned Wednesday night from a business trip in Los Angeles.
Mr and Mrs John Kasser left Los Angeles on Wednesday for a visit to the Zenda Gold Mining Co where he holds an interest. Wednesday morning doctors Benson and Graham attended a Mexican boy at the grammar school after he broke his thigh bone while playing.
A. B. Schuck of Los Angeles accidentally shot himself Saturday night while cleaning his automatic shotgun in a cabin at Big Bear. The tragedy ends a quiet weekend retreat for the man, with investigators noting self-inflicted gunshot as the cause of death.
Al Mudgett and Forst Dillingham left Friday on a hunt trip in the Sam Bernardino mountains. They returned Monday with a deer a four pointer. Whether it is with a rod or a gun they seem to come home with the bacon.
Mrs. Fred Lobaugh of Needles and her niece Miss Juanita Corey of Ravenna Ohio visited Mr J A Evans and friends here Friday and Saturday. They left Sunday for Los Angeles. Miss Juanita had visited her aunt here several years ago.
Mrs. Bessie Slaton of Bauer and Slaton visited San Bernardino at the start of the week. Fred Bauer with Everett Evenson, bookkeeper for Bauer and Slaton, attended the Chevrolet service meeting at the Mission Inn in Riverside on Wednesday.
Mrs A A True entertained her bridge club with a luncheon at the Rose Inn on Wednesday and played the game at her home. Mrs George Henderson held high score. Mrs True’s sister, author Mrs Worts of New York, was her house guest. Mrs Josephine True, mother of A A True, recently back from an eastern tour, was also a luncheon guest.
Tom Williams of Yermo was driving on the highway six miles out from Victorville toward San Bernardino when a motorist struck his vehicle on a Wednesday evening. He received medical attention in Victorville and returned home, as reported.
A six foot fence is being erected around the Evensen lumber yard during the current week. Local authorities or yard managers oversee the installation and security enhancements planned for the site.
Friday evening the town under P T A sponsorship welcomed both schools teaching faculty with a program in the Grammar school auditorium. The program featured the High School Orchestra two numbers a duet by Palmer boys a welcome by Mrs. Hart a short talk by Mr. Pearce a skit by the Junior Class coached by Miss Lynn another short talk by Mr. Langworthy a song by four Mexican girls from Mrs. Lester's room and refreshments with dancing.
TIERNAN RADIO & ELECTRIC advertises four Atwater Kent models with clear prices. Model 40 with six A C tubes and one rectifier sells for 128 dollars, Model 42 at 90 dollars, Model 44 at 110 dollars without tubes, and Model 52 in cabinet at 144.50 dollars. Operating cost noted as only a fraction of a cent per hour.
Griffith Post members and friends enjoyed a social at the Rose Inn with basket lunches and talks by San Bernardino and Colton legionmen. Bob Garmen and Mr Stockwell spoke on the annual convention. Dancing followed with Palmer orchestra and Chas Brass. Judge Healey attended. a grand theft case involving Louis and Douglas Craig was noted.
Fred Clemett and his wife faced liquor related charges after a Fontana ranch seizure. The appellate court affirmed a two counts conviction leading to a possible concurrent three year term for Clemett at San Quentin and a remittitur pending re sentencing.
Miss Caroline Waters, San Bernardino County librarian, visited Ludlow and updated branch hours to Monday Tuesday Thursday and Friday evenings. New books added. orders can be placed from San Bernardino. Local families visited Los Angeles and Long Beach. Ludlow school hosts a Halloween masquerade in the town hall. Two students, Barbara and Betty Pettit, moved to Goffs. Columbus Day program draws about fifteen visitors, followed by the first of monthly Mother's meetings. Next meeting is the second Thursday each month, with a Favorite Recipe session in November.
Barstow Kiwanis sent Harvey Mosier and four members including George Cunningham Fred Bauer Clinton Whitlow and George Henderson to Hemet as Barstow delegates for a five minute talk on What is Kiwanis and where is it going Ed Vail of Riverside won the division and will advance to Sacramento to decide California Nevada representatives for Milwaukee The Hemet meeting at the Hemet Woman's Club drew about 150 Kiwanis and ladies Harold Tiernan was elected Lieut Governor and Wm O G Harris of San Bernardino was named California Nevada district governor.
Thirty four members of the 20 30 Club dined at the Rose Inn Tuesday at 7 15 PM. Barstow and San Bernardino members joined in the program with Ivor Davies and Johnny Williams presiding. The San Bernardino group highlighted training gained through club membership and LeRoy Shorty Phelps of Santa Fe Railroad was noted as an active member.
Winslow Arizona reports meteor mine shaft progress as 140 feet deep with seven feet drilled daily through hard sandstone. Three shifts totaling 37 men work 24 hours for three weeks as the meteor, a unique and valuable find, is estimated at $50 a ton and about 10 million tons. Company plans a drift from the main shaft to the meteor.
Clyde Compton finished the basement excavation for the new Dillingham store to be built on Main Street, marking a milestone in the project.
Last Friday J D Barry and son of Los Angeles visited their ranch while Mr and Mrs R B Riley and daughter spent Thursday and Friday in San Bernardino and Santa Ana. Mrs Moore and children of Harper Lake visited Mrs S S Hill last week. Mrs H A Briggs writes from Maroneck New York that the east looks beautiful with no frost and leaves turning. The Woman's Improvement Club held a meeting at the school house last Thursday. Mrs M E Byrne is adding two rooms to her home behind the store with Raftery C D Raftery’s father doing the work. Miss Bailey and Mrs McClura of Hemet spent the weekend with their brother H C Bailey and family. Mrs Harry Foye's mother and sister visited last week. Kramer Oil Co will begin drilling again within ninety days on their well.
