Barstow to decorate city for October 21 and 22 as distinguished Mexican officials and engineers visit to discuss international highway planning. Delegates include governors, engineers, and officials from Sonora Oaxaca and Baja California with U S highway representatives.
Barstow develops as the division point between Southern and Northern California for Hoover Dam traffic. A Sunday Banquet at Beacon Cafe featured prominent Southern California figures and guests from the Los Angeles City Department of Water and Power. Visitors praised Barstow’s town, appearance, and its first-rate hotel and cafe facilities.
Miss Henrietta died this Thursday morning at the county hospital in San Bernardino. Her niece Miss La Von MacDermitt learned of the end Wednesday night by telegraph. Henrietta came to Barstow years ago, ran a boarding house, and helped her niece attend local high school. She suffered several ailments but was not bedridden until this week.
Barstow hosts a businesslike Chamber of Commerce gathering with reports on fire, water, gas, telephones, streets, and drivers as well as a push to grow membership from 25 to 100. Dan Curtin reports placer miners north of Barstow and Bentonite Cay deposits. Cima vermiculite and nearby mines are noted along with Borax pioneers and Calico core drilling progress.
Barstow American Legion members joined Judge Lubin Henderson at a San Bernardino Inter-Post Council meeting in Upland chaired by Frank H. Mogle who was elected County Commander amid a close vote. The same report cites fifty killed and hundreds injured after a boiler blast at the Capital Garment factory on Highth and Santee streets as ambulances rushed victims to hospitals.
Mrs Agnes Bauer died at Victorville hospital after appendix operation. She lived 45 years and loved flowers and gardening at Rose Inn built with her husband Fred Bauer. Born in Boulder Colorado, wed in Pasadena, they settled in Barstow 18 years ago. She leaves sons William Webster from a prior marriage and Ramond and Frankie Bauer. husband Fred Bauer a longtime business partner in Bauer and Slaton. Funeral held at Shaw parlors in San Bernardino with many attending.
Over 200 Kiwanians and ladies attended in Hemet at the Woman's Club. Ira C. Dandis, former Riverside president, elected lieutenant governor for District Six covering Las Vegas Riverside San Bernardino Colton Redlands Hemet San Jacinto Barstow. George Henderson of Barstow was invited but declined due to costs and absence from work. After business a banquet, oratorical contest, music, sleight of hand, and dancing followed. Barstow attendees included George Cunningham Leon Whitney Lloyd Tiernan and others.
Forty nine members gathered at the Beacon Cafe for a luncheon to start the Barstow Woman's Club year. Inez Beimer presided and introduced officers including Jamie Kelly as 1st vice president Lauretta Weld as 2nd vice president Francis Smith as recording secretary Ida Smith as corresponding secretary Beulah Hart as treasurer Mabel Garver as auditor and Kittie Sischo as parliamentarian. A short program followed.
The Barstow Chamber of Commerce will hold a banquet December 2. President John Benson named Frank Butts Fred Goellner and Tom Willson to arrange it. A special program and speakers are planned. Tickets will be sold soon. The group aims for 500 members and dues of five dollars annually. Barstow is unincorporated, so the Chamber functions as a governing body. The County Supervisors support the Chamber recommendations, urging property owners to join and participate in leadership selection.
Union Oil Company completes a new Barstow sub station to handle rising business. Two workers and an extra truck will join the Barstow plant in the new year. The local complex includes two 30,000 gallon storage tanks, a newly added warehouse, and a two stall garage. W. M. Chase becomes local manager after Ray Ford resigned to start a Victorville venture. Major oil firms in Barstow have invested heavily, sustaining a sizable payroll for local distribution operations.
