The junior class Halloween masquerade was a success with Flora Brass winning first prize as a French girl and Joseph Chambers second as a girl. Miss Paul and Miss Metzger are absent due to relatives' illness. County plans add etiquette and decorum to public school curricula led by Superintendent Collins, stressing manners as vital as academics. Teachers teach these lessons statewide. no text books used as schools adopt new behavior guidance.

Harris Loses Write In Fight by Narrow Margin in Barstow

Ed Harris loses a Barstow write in race for constable to FE. Lt. Pitcher by 18 votes after a long contest. Lubin Henderson beats T. O. Carter for justice of the peace 250 to 75, with Henderson on the ballot. Other local results include Johnson over Dunkorth for district attorney 170 to 965 and various propositions and offices tallied.

Barstow Race Sees Tie In Governor Contest And Local Votes

In Barstow the governor race between Richardson and Woolwine ended in a 126-126 tie with socialist Tierr at 42. Barstow precincts split counts for Pitcher and Harris, affecting majorities while Hinkley shifted totals. Henderson led for justice of the peace with 250 votes against Carter 75. County building bonds failed 154 to 181 and sheriff’s raise failed 142 to 62. Railroad workers voted per instruction. local shop crafts backed Richardson for governor.

Mines and shipments reported around Tecopa and Silver Lake

Lead and silver operations continue in the Tecopa district with a shipment last week and no new reports. Pacific Borax Co of Death Valley ships three to five tons weekly. Florspar east of Baxter is milled. The old Riggs mine near Silver Lake reopens with a 150 ounce per ton ledge, eight workers, 105 feet drifted, and a 40 ton car of 150 oz ore slated for a Utah smelter on the 15th.

Mr. Lowman of Water reports oil drilling nine miles east of Newberry district at 750 feet. A busy week sees housing demand in Barstow and desert areas. Barstow Real Estate Co reports many requests for improved ranches to buy or trade. Dr F A Drydan and C F Kane lease the Massen claims in Silver district north of Barstow, leasers from Los Angeles plan sinking a chair on nearby property.

Local Elections Highlight Barstow Notes and News

Tom Williams wins constable of Yermo 47 to 15 and McFall elected justice of the peace 45 to 9. District Attorney race results show Duckworth carried Barstow by 75 votes, county wide loss. Also: hospital illness updates, bank holiday, road work at Dillingham Apartments, ship exports from Amboy and Virginia Dale, and social events at Antlers club with prizes and a new baby.

Halloween Party at Webber Ranch Draws Local Crowd

About 60 people gathered at the Webber ranch Saturday evening for a Hallowe en party with many in costume. An old witch with a caldron told fortunes in a forest corner as games and dancing proceeded. A picnic supper followed the event. Wallace Clark and family of Barstow visited neighbors Sunday. F T Russell and family of South Pasadena plan to winter on their Minneola ranch. A lumber delivery arrived for John P Hood and Mr Borshay. Tom Jengen became pumper at Yucca Arizona Santa Fe station. The Weil family welder’s car moved from Minneola to Newberry station.

Willing Workers Party at McRae Home

The Willing Workers class met November 6 from 7 to 10:30 pm at the home of Mr and Mrs McRae. The program included readings, a trombone solo by George Leak Jukes, games and class songs followed by refreshments of doughnuts apples and popcorn balls.
