Thousands Of Shriners To Visit Barstow For Convention

Thousands of Shriners pass Barstow as they travel by steamer and train to Los Angeles for the 55th Shrine Convention. Barstow decorates for the event with local welcome hosts ready to greet visitors and guides at stations and airports. The parade, Circus Maximus performances, Catalina trip, and a grand pageant in the Coliseum highlight a schedule with 6000 to 100,000 participants converging on Southern California.

Legion Plans Fourth Celebration

Barstow men joined Phoenix lodge in San Bernardino Monday for initiation staged by the Hollywood Masonic Club. Monte Blue delivered the masters talk, praised as one of the best, with a dramatic program by actors. Attendees from Barstow included BE. L. Local baseball game ends 3 to 2 in favor of Colton PFE

A Sunday game at the local diamond saw Barstow lose to Colton PFE 3 to 2. Barstow pitcher Bill Langandorf is in the hospital, so no game is scheduled for this Sunday.

Halt Million Gallon Reservoir Completed

Imperial Utilities Corporation announces completion of a 500000 gallon water tank in Barstow south of Main Street on Bear Valley Road. The reinforced concrete tank, 75 feet higher than the old one, connects to Main Street with an eight inch pipe, boosting supply for the south business district and residences. Investment about 30000 dollars. additional mains laid and future developments planned with Highway Communities, Inc. and a two story, sixty room hotel site expected to draw further investment.

Sixteen Will Receive Diplomas at B H S Commencement

Sixteen seniors will receive diplomas at B H S Saturday evening June 1 in the Grammar school auditorium. Dr Blanchard of University of California will be speaker. Woman's Glob Honor Past And Incoming Presidents

Forty eight Barstow Woman's Club members met at the Harvey House for a dinner then gathered at the Grammar school auditorium for a final club session and entertainment. Mrs Garver praised outgoing and incoming leaders Mrs Pitcher Mrs White and Mrs Henderson. A loyal treasurer reported 97 dollars on hand. Hollywood skit by Mrs Whitecar Mrs Orr Miss Lynn Langworthy and others pleased the audience as Walter Evans sang. The evening closed with old fashioned dancing and reflections on make up as art.

Graduation at Barstow Grammar School Before Vacation

Thirty two grammar school pupils will receive their diplomas from Barstow Grammar School as it closes for vacation on Monday. Leon P. Whitney, clerk of the board, will present the diplomas. The staff may grow to ten teachers and a principal next year, with only about five of the current teachers expected to return.

Community Starts Erecting $5,000 Boy Scout Building

Barstow community plans a $5,000 Boy Scouts building with foundation cemented and construction starting June 3. A. A. True reports progress and predicts completion by July 1 with donations from Kiwanis Club, Parent Teachers Association and many locals aiding labor and materials.

The 20 30 Club meeting opened with members and visitors present. Al Henderson spoke on the meaning and purpose of 20 30 and Rev William C Hull of Pasadena discussed Riding for a Fall. The group noted Niagara Falls power and announced an indoor ball game at Barstow High School to start the league, inviting all to attend.

Auto accident claims two lives in San Bernardino county

Mrs Amelia Weide a 47 and her grandson Charles Clinton Crane aged 5 were killed in a Sunday morning crash on the Santa Fe crossing at Rialto avenue near Mt Vernon in Santa Monica San Bernardino County. The county total to date this year rises to fifteen deaths from auto accidents.

Death of Charles E. Slaton in Long Beach

Long Beach mourns Charles E. Slaton born February 24 1863 in Madisonville Hopkins County Kentucky. He died May 25 after illness at his home with funeral held Monday conducted by Rev Isaac McRae. He leaves two wives Fulton Slaton Halkie Slaton, son Otho, daughter-in-law Gladys Slaton, three brothers in Southern California and two grandsons Derali and Tommy of Barstow. Fulton E. Slaton, his son, died June 12 1928 in a plane crash at Barstow.
