The Monterey Cypress grows in a narrow coastal belt near Monterey Bay and has a long debated age. Recent examination of stump rings shows trees aged 200 to 300 years in favorable soils, while other straight, thrifty trees show far fewer rings, indicating faster growth in permeable soil and slower growth in rocky sites.
