Telegraphic news reports a large fire at the Southern Railway freight transfer station at Inman yards near Atlanta causing an estimated 10 million dollars in damage. The item also notes various international wartime dispatches and local honors.
A meeting is called for 3 o clock Sunday afternoon March 23 at Drumm's barber shop to organize a Barstow baseball team. Teams exist in Victorville Needles and Mojave with requests for games. Needles asks to play Barstow March 30.
Obituary tribute recalls Charles Van Loan as Salvation Army drummer, writer, and editor of Saturday Evening Post. His father, a Salvation Army captain, died heartbroken after learning of his son's passing. Campaign appeal asks donations to fund the Salvation Army drive in Barstow region.
During March 24 to 31 the Salvation Army seeks 822000 to sustain home service work in California. Elks lead some campaigns while others are citizen driven. all counties are organized. Dr J O White longtime Barstow resident and former Santa Fe physician died of old age illness. Born November 27 1846 in Nashville he moved to California 33 years ago and lived in Barstow 18 years. Survived by wife and three married children A W White FE L White and Mrs N Platt and several grandchildren Funeral held Tuesday at Congregational church with Rev J Price and Rev Barnes officiating with floral tributes and a procession to the family plot in Los Angeles for interment.
Last Thursday night Barstow saw a light snow, the first in two years, with most of it melting by Friday. The W. B. Werner mine area recorded five inches, while March snow sparked wildflowers across desert flats and Werner camp approaches. Desert cacti bloomed on higher levels, marking the rare event.
Sacramento legislators back a $50.544 million road bond vote with Barstow slated for shares. About 350000 is designated for the National Old Trails route from Barstow to Needles and 150000 for Barstow to Mojave. The Highway Commission pledges paving from Summit to Victorville and a macadam road Barstow to Victorville.
A. H. Pendleton returned from Los Angeles Monday recounting snow encounters last Friday at Hesperia and a foot of snow on the highway at the Summit, affecting travel conditions.
