Ed Burke proprietor of the Tourist Garage escaped injury when his Studebaker blew a tire at high speed west of town Monday. The car was hurled to the roadside, bumped a bank of cath, and flipped over. The windshield and most windows shattered, but Burke remained uninjured. The car suffered severe body damage.
Posters in Barstow indicate the trans continental foot race will start in Los Angeles on Saturday March 3. Early schedules listed El Monte and San Bernardino as first night stops but later notices name Puente as the opening stop with Colton following.
A Santa Fe freight derailed Wednesday morning at Trojan four miles west of Bagdad. Twenty four cars left the rails blocking both tracks after a broken axle on a downhill spread. Engineer J. O. Paulson. all railroad traffic halted for the day.
After Barstow exited playoff contention the basketball team recuperates as handball takes the lead. tennis practice continues for a late term tournament while coaches seek new talent. Dr Lyle Graham advances poultry breeding facilities, O Q Jonas drills a well for ten acres of alfalfa, Dr B McCoy buys the Hanan place and plans wells and reseeding, Joe Preta expands his homestead with wells and twenty acres of grapes, Jay Pickell crews drill wells and ditch to meet government proof on six hundred forty acres, Mrs Sischo rumored to open a modern dance hall at Newberry Campground, Mrs Hal Mellon hosts a party for daughter Bessie and Billy Peacock with guests from Hinkley and Needles, Sischo sisters play music, plus a Saturday night dance at Newberry school house for Mr and Mrs Grant Harp. Papa Burke works on mining claim assessments. Hal Mellon faces a three month highway lay-off.
Mrs. Chapin has come home from a seven week visit in Ohio, Kansas, and Fairfield Connecticut. Her mother died after a lingering illness and was cremated with ashes sent to Ontario for burial. Compliments have arrived for the Barstow Printer pamphlet on the San Bernardino Orange Show. Advertisements from merchants across California and Nevada appear in the folder.
J. W. Sleeper Fred Vaile and Dan J. Chapin of the C and V ranch, once the Gibbs ranch, plan to plant sixty acres of alfalfa this year with forty acres planned for the spring if water from their sole existing well proves sufficient.
Mr. and Mrs. Neill of Los Angeles visited Barstow Friday with Mr. and Mrs. L. P. Whitney. Mr. Neill and Mrs. Whitney are half brother and sister.
Mr and Mrs George Deskins are enjoying a week long vacation visiting San Bernardino and Los Angeles, California.
Arthur Doran and Paul Bell and party visited Furnace Creek Inn in Death Valley this week. They left Sunday and returned Tuesday.
L. J. Henderson and EF. L. White attended the funeral of Coroner J. B. Hanna on Monday in San Bernardino.
Mr and Mrs Steve Videl spent several days in Los Angeles this week joining Barstow visitors for the fight. They stayed at the Hayward Hotel located at 6th and Spring Street during their visit.
Mrs C Deskins becomes owner of the Universal automatic safety iron in a giveaway by Riley Electric Shop at Antlers Hall last week. Deskins guessed five cents, within one eighth of a cent of the actual cook rate on the Universal Electric Range.
Mr. Skobel of the Skobel-Haimut ranch visited town reporting 450 turkey eggs in incubation and 57 baby poults hatched. He touts alfalfa and turkey farming as the quickest path to profit on the farm.
Mr and Mrs Timms relocate from Los Angeles to Barstow with Timms working as an operator at Yermo.
Rev Isaac McRae says the Congregational Church building on Second Street will be completed in April with dedication services set for April 28. Dr Henry Kendall Booth of First Congregation Church Long Beach is expected to speak at the opening.
A. O. Bud Rush and his family have moved back to Barstow after leaving about eleven years ago. They have purchased Pete's Shoe Shop, signaling a new business venture in the city.
Mr and Mrs La Marsh enjoyed a visit to the Orange Show and spent several days in Los Angeles last week.
W H Sides plans three new cottages at the rear of his California Inn Camp. The追加 units will enlarge the campground’s capacity, reflecting growth in the lodging business managed by Sides.
Mrs. J. W. Sleeper of the C. & W Ranch at Hinkley travels to Los Angeles on Sunday for a two week stay.
Fred Vale and Ralph Scroggins of Los Angeles spent the weekend at the C. V. Ranch in Hinkley, California, enjoying a brief rural sojourn.
Daggett California restaurant Millett's Dining Room advertises a Sunday March 4 dinner featuring Daggett turkey and chicken with mashed potatoes creamed peas salad candied sweet potatoes Spanish rice pie or pudding tea coffee and iced tea. Regular dinner of beef or pork with all items offered for 50 cents.
The Southern Sierras will build an 18 mile 35000 volt extension from Barstow to Yermo via Daggett with a projected cost of about 32000 dollars. The line will serve Daggett and Yermo, cross the Mojave River, support mining and agricultural growth, and include a 400 HP substation at Yermo. The move aims to aid Mojave River Valley development and reduce Union Pacific shop power costs.
Daggett residents report progress toward mining expansion with eight carloads of lumber to Zenda mines and machinery arrivals at Zenda Cairo. A full mill planned from Caliente, as Calico’s past boom era is hoped to return. Constable J E Harris states he has vital information regarding Mr W H C Green and seeks to contact his sister in Barstow whose name and address are unknown. He urges the sister to come forward for the information.
Southern Pacific Railroad advertises land sales across San Bernardino Kern and Los Angeles counties with Frank B Rutledge of Lancaster as local sales agent. First publication March to August 31.
Two men, John S Wedekind and C W Rus sell met death when their Franklin touring car overturned at a railroad crossing west of Barstow. Wedekind, 67, was en route to San Francisco with ore for a test. C W Russel, 41, died from a broken neck. Bodies taken to Barstow morgue. deaths certified by Deputy Coroner Emmet Waters. Curley of Searchlight, Nevada arrived to claim remains.
Fulton Slaton and Lieut Jonas returned from Texas with a new aeroplane after testing three engines. The engine is being overhauled at Central Garage. The plane will head to Death Valley at month end on a merchant expedition, kept at the field north of town. A second field is reported by Chas Williams in his addition south of Willett Camp.
Mrs. Frank Allen of South Pasadan visits her son Nolan in Minneola. I. K. Loomis returns from Los Angeles on business. A L Marzo buys 160 acres north of Minneola from H A Bowles. Weatherwax at Skobel Haimut ranch buys E L Hopkins 160 acres. Neal Webber goes to Fontana for roofing work. Mr and Mrs E D Hayes and daughter visit Terra Bella relatives. Hayes owned a flax and alfalfa ranch in San Joaquin Valley. Minneola crossing improved by highway crew led by Mr Harp. Local meeting to address overcrowded schoolhouse votes on a special tax to enlarge the building.

After months of illness with cancer Mrs Mamie Honey died Friday night. She had lived in Barstow sixteen years and was the widow of James Honey aged fifty five. Funeral services were at the Antler Club with Rev McRae officiating and she was interred at Mountain View Cemetery in San Bernardino. Four children Laura Lottie James and Claude James Whatley survive.
