Active Oil Work At Chicago Barstow Well
A visit to the Chicago Barstow Oil Co. well yesterday morning reports drilling to 2686 ft in brown shale showing oil indications and gas smell. Drillers work day and night under W. N. Gaddie for results with oil showing improving as they reach the shale covering oil sand. Last Sunday local residents rode autos to view the well and the depth continues to attract interest.

Desert liquor licenses debated by county supervisors
County Supervisors awarded Needles five retail licenses replacing four and Victorville two replacing one. The board shut off remaining first district licenses, a move initially hard to understand. They may amend the ordinance to reflect precinct voting outcomes allowing unlicensed and dry precincts to follow their votes.

County library plan gains statewide adoption
Miss N G Eddy of the State Library at Sacramento says 22 counties have adopted the plan and many more are arranging to do so. She visited Barstow Thursday to promote the movement which would allow county libraries to procure books on any subject including educational scientific fiction and history.

Death of Lavie foreman struck by freight engine 1662
F. L. Melville about 55 years old section foreman at Lavie was fatally injured Monday morning near Hector when run down by freight engine 1662. He died at Barstow hospital from brain concussion. Coroner ruled accidental death. He leaves a wife and three children.

C O D service to start in parcels post system
On July 1 the post office department will implement the c o d feature of the parcels post. A ten cent fee covers this COD service and insures the parcel for its full value up to fifty dollars. The limit of collection is one hundred dollars per parcel. COD parcels are accepted only at money order offices and when addressed to money order offices. Parcels may be forwarded without extra COD fee. The addressee may not inspect contents until charges are receipted.
