National Highway Notes on Santa Fe Trail Pioneers Route

George A. Tweedy, a mining engineer from Los Angeles, and his family toured the Santa Fe Trail, praising improved roads and future motor travel from New York to San Francisco. He logged about 150 miles daily, noted good dirt roads in Western Kansas, and recommended the trip for fresh air and scenery though warned of rains and unbridged streams. He plans to continue toward Barstow via National Highway and Stoddard's Well routes.

Buick Carat Agent Reports Desert Roads Near Barstow

C W Babcock and W L Thomas of Hastings Michigan relay their Barstow Printer editorial note. KE C Small, Buick Carat agent in Bernardino, recounts directing two Ford visitors on National Highway to Barstow then Stoddard's Well road and noting desert road conditions after they left Victorville.

Central Machine Works Changes Hands In Barstow

On Monday June 30 Central Garage and Machine Works Barstow passed from Joseph T. Evans to KE L Stanfield of Los Angeles. Evans founded the business in February 1911 and built a first class shop between Needles and San Bernardino. Stanfield, a machinist with auto focus, will expand facilities, add vulcanizing and air equipment, stock tires and supplies, and make Barstow the desert agency for Michigan and Buick cars. Stanfield will relocate to Barstow shortly.

Barstow residents make a busy week with Needles and Ottawa Beach visits. Osborne Mines at Ord Mountain reportedly sold to New York capitalists with $80,000 in announced shares and liens. An education term starts Sept 15 with Brown Wilcox and Grimm as teachers. A newborn eight pound boy joins the McCuistis as Wysong plans a 60 day north coast trip. Lawrence Flint returns from Los Angeles to Barstow for summer, and Mrs. Flint joins her husband in Barstow.

Barstow saloon doors bear varied signs

Tuesday morning each closed saloon in Barstow displayed notices. McRae & Co. advertised a drug store medicine for wets and drys by J. R. Arbios M D Prop. Sloan & Hart posted Salvation Army services at 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. Rev Skookum pastor. Jesse Flint’s sign read Gone, but not forgotten.

G W Macauley Dies After Long Santa Fe Service

G W Macauley longtime Santa Fe employee and reading room librarian died at Santa Fe hospital in Los Angeles on Saturday June 28 from throat cancer. He was about 76. Funeral held in Los Angeles Monday. Mrs Macauley was with him at death. He served as passenger conductor and later reading room staff, including Barstow station.

Desert champs pummeled at Mojave 12 to 6

The desert champions were soundly beaten 12 to 6 at Mojave on Sunday in a disappointing baseball outing. Spectators saw a ragged exhibition as large players played like schoolchildren.

Barber fatally mangled by train in Barstow yards

Jd R Sry a barber recently employed at J M Mairrones shop was found in Barstow railroad yards with both feet severed after a freight engine passed. He died on the train to San Bernardino after being assisted by switchmen and hospital staff. Evidence in his possessions tied him to Fraternal orders in Seattle.

Power and Light Deal Expands Barstow Light and Power

Southern Sierras Power Co took over Barstow Utility Co electrical department on July 1 and plans for development follow. W. W. Brison and C. A. Kelley visited Barstow Tuesday to inventory the transferred department, marking the start of enlarging the city’s light and power supply.
