Reports cover local gas engine repairs, well drilling by Professor Briggs, and a poised rice planting push. Local crops shine with tomatoes peas asparagus and alfalfa, with promising hay and new home building rumors amid desert-entry prospects.
A heavy thunder and rainstorm hit Barstow Saturday afternoon, starting at 1 PM and dumping about two inches in an hour. Flooding damaged freight yards and the Main Street residences, washed away an unanchored tennis court, and stranded autos in water on the high power track area. Debris and silt filled areas near the Dillingham apartments and a viaduct, with repairs underway by Hills crews on Monday after another lighter storm. Total rainfall for Saturday and Sunday reached 2.01 inches.
Adjutant General Horree issues instructions to Local Hoard on draft classes. Married men of draft age with no children as of May 18, 1917 are moved to class one. Men with children as of June 9, 1918 leave class four for class two. Married men cannot claim dependency for wife or children. Men 21 since January 5 1817 and married since January 15 1918 cannot claim dependency. Those 21 since June 5 1917 who married between May 18 1917 and January 15 1028 with children born or unborn by June 9 1918 go to class two.
Report from New York dates the sinking of a German submarine off the Virginia Capes last Friday morning. Arrivals from Cuba brought the tale to the city. A Florida training camp detachment of California boys reportedly joined an expedition to round up slackers and wandered into a district unaware the nation was at war, asking if the war of the rebellion was still ongoing.
Roland Brockman and Clarence Nickle return to Corona California with their families after visits. Johnson family members have returned home with two sons and a daughter, while another son and his child accompany a relative back to Hinkley.
A San Antonio dispatch dated June 1 recounts a hero who saved Lieut Pat at the western front and later aided his escape from a German prison camp. Training at Government expense aims to prepare men for army roles both front and rear with no guaranteed branch assignment.
A W Craig, Barstow, serving with the United States Expeditionary forces in France, writes his mother May 20. He describes off duties, life on the docks, road work by American troops, street congestion in French towns, weather turning green, and native produce carts.
A brief afternoon storm hit Barstow causing heavy rain and winds that toppled about feet of the Santa Fe fence behind the post office. East Main Street suffered salting damage from Pirlinghame returning from Bear Valley as the Shriveway was washed away. The town morn shifted from clear to severe around 1:90 p.m.
Local Board calls nine physically qualified men for limited service with entrainment set for June 27 in Graydock MM.
