Barstow Needles Highway to Get $1.5 Million Upgrade
California Highway Commission approves 30 mile Desert road grading and oil surfacing on Barstow to Needles stretch from Essex to Klinefelter. A 29 mile section to be improved with bids opening July 2. Total project cost about $1.5 million as part of plans to complete interstate connections ahead of the Olympic Games. Plans for Essex to Klinefelter are under preparation. Only 12 miles of this highway remain unimproved.

A.J. Savinovich known as Tony of Tony’s Cafe Barstow had his right leg amputated above the knee Thursday morning at Ramona hospital San Bernardino by Dr Savage. The nurse reported Tony stood the operation very well after a call from his partner Mrs Brooks Tabor.

Slayer of Victorville Youth Found in Missouri Penitentiary
The slayer of Jesse Boles, a Victorville youth, is located in the Missouri state penitentiary at Jefferson City per Sheriff Shay. Alexander N. Morsette, alias Frenchy, escaped Los Angeles in August 1928 after shooting Beles at a service station. W. Davis, alias A. B. West, alias A. D. Webb, awaiting Morsetti in an auto, was sentenced to life in San Quentin on February 9, 1929.

Tourist Killed in Auto Accident Tuesday
Nathan Shalett, a prominent New Haven, Connecticut businessman, died Tuesday from a fractured skull after his car overturned from a tire blowout. Mrs. Shalet and daughter Winnifred were seriously injured but improving at Victorville hospital. The crash occurred two miles east of Newberry on the National Old Trails highway. Dr. John Graham treated them in Barstow and transported them to Victorville in the White and Platt ambulance.
