Government to Hein Build Big Bear Valley Road

Expenditures totaling 968,697 of National Forest Highway Funds for 50 miles of road in California were approved by Secretary of Agriculture Wallace. Five projects will be built as part of the State Highway system, including the ten mile Big Bear Valley road at 358,718 with 185,000 state aid and 200,000 for Crescent City Grants Park road, plus 13 miles between Redding and Alturas and 11 miles Red Bluff-Susanville plus six miles Cuyama, with California contributing 92,5000. Forest Service calls them important links in the state system.

Elsholz works at the Ambassador hotel in Los Angeles. Leo Mikora is preparing a large acreage for alfalfa and fruit trees. J Force Edwards and a friend drove from Adelanta to irrigate the Edwards homestead, formerly D. W. Edwards family home. Edwards hopes to return to live here within a year or two.

Barstow Labor Council Pushes Eighteenth Amendment Revision

The Barstow Central Labor Council calls for a government controlled re-interpretation of the Eighteenth Amendment to permit lawful manufacture and sale of light wines and beer as non intoxicating beverages. It cites moonshiners bootleggers and law enforcement funding as issues and urges a more proper enforcement to reduce illegal activity.

Railroad Wage Reductions Hit 400000 Workers

The United States Railroad Labor Board announced wage cuts of three to five cents per hour for about 400,000 maintenance of way workers and common laborers at rail shops, trimming payroll by roughly 48 million dollars annually. The cut averages 13.2 percent and is the first in a series, with later reductions planned for 500,000 skilled shop workers and about 200,000 clerks and telegraphers, while train service staff face no change.

Federal shop crafts unions seek conference with rail board

In Chicago on May 30 the Federal Shop Crafts Unions representing 400 000 railway workers delivered a virtual ultima tumm to the United States Railroad Labor Board. They asked for an immediate conference and for the board to take jurisdiction over all cases where railroads are alleged to disobey orders. If the board refuses a strike ballot will be sent to shopmen nationwide.

Indianapolis May 30 James Murphy of Los Angeles winner of the 1921 French grand prix captured the 500 mile Indianapolis speedway race before a record crowd of 135000 spectators. His average speed was 94.48 miles an hour.
