Calif newspaper men tour Santa Barbara and Santa Maria

A group including Mr and Mrs Tiernan left Barstow July Fourth for the California Newspaper Advertising Managers Association meeting. They stayed at the Barbara Hotel in Santa Barbara and toured the Beacon Tavern. Highlights included a fireworks display and Old Spanish Day Fiesta preparations. The tour continued to Santa Maria at the Santa Maria Inn, with sessions, speakers from USC and the California Newspaper Publishers Association, a luncheon, and a dance.

Vagabond King guest visits Tiernan home and coast tour

Rod Waggoner uncle of Lloyd Tiernan visits the Tiernan home this week. He has long been in New York theater and last year produced Vagabond King with the original cast on the coast, playing in San Francisco Los Angeles and San Diego.

Boulder Dam construction underway signals national growth

The Interior Secretary announced start of the Boulder Canyon Project after the Appropriation Bill, with Engineer Walker R. Young and team staking out railroad routes and town plans. The effort anticipates four large diversion tunnels, coffer dams, and a new town for 4 000 to 5 000 workers near the dam, plus a substantial boost to Barstow as a midway transportation hub.

Mass Meeting At Beacon Tavern For Good Roads

The Barstow Chamber of Commerce executive committee calls a mass meeting next Wednesday evening in Barstow to discuss highways. The Beacon Tavern lobby hosts the event at 8 o'clock, inviting locals and outsiders to view the new building. Yermo Daggett Newberry residents and Barstow property owners petition the county to maintain the Yermo Daggett link, a highway once returned by the state after the Yermo Barstow route was completed. The meeting will address improving the connecting road between Yerma and Daggett.

Barstow to Receive Art Exhibit This Fall

Guests at the Beacon Tavern include Mr and Mrs J E B Itter and son Julian of Hollywood and Samuel H Piles former U S Senator and Envoy. Itter plans an art exhibit at the tavern this fall and Titer, who averages four exhibits a year, consents to bring his work to Barstow, a courteous gesture to locals.

Mayor Rolph to Visit Barstow Next Month

Arrangements through the Barstow Printer plan Mayor Rolph of San Francisco to speak in Barstow on August 18 with a second meeting in Needles the following evening. The trips likely mark his sole district visit during the campaign as his schedule remains tight through primaries. Rolph has led San Francisco for twenty years and is popular with labor and business sectors.

Barstow Sanitary District Committee Reports Strong Progress

The Chamber of Commerce appointed panel reports very favorable progress toward forming Barstow’s sanitary district. A map of the proposed district will be exhibited at the regular C of C meeting Monday July 14 at 8 p.m. in the Boy Scouts Building. Everyone welcome.
