Frank Miratti hosted an open house at the Beacon Tavern drawing guests from Ludlow to Los Angeles. The evening featured speeches by company officials and Old Spain inspired performances. Staff in Spanish attire greeted visitors as flowers filled the lobby and the Beacon Cafe shared in praise.
Richfield Oil Company president C. Fuller and wife Mrs Fuller led a party flying Friday from Los Angeles to Barstow in a twelve passenger Richfield Fokker. I B Garretson and Mrs Garretson, and I N Randall with Mrs Randall joined presidents C M Fuller and W H Cottel, while Paul B House, head of Highway Communities and Electrical Products Corp, and Mrs House arrived later by special plane. House departed Portland the day prior.
Mrs Dorse Fissel hosted widows of the 20 30 Club while husbands attended the weekly meeting Tuesday night. Mrs Nola Hartwick Mrs Alfred Henderson and Mrs Van Aman decorated a Barstow Garage truck bearing just married with old shoes a soft seat and a 2x4 in the bed. After the meeting the men joined the ladies and the newlyweds Donald Leak and Barbara Merritt were given a city tour to the horns. Donald Leak and Barbara Merritt recently married and are graduates of this year’s Barstow high school.
After weeks of work by Fred Goellner, power company superintendent, arrangements are set to install electric lights along the viaduct sidewalk. Permission from the Highway Department was secured, with compliance for the railroad, lighting district, and power company. Wires will be under cover to prevent glare for drivers and yard workers.
A June traffic report shows 384 872 people traveling in 10 863 autos via National Old Trails and Arrowhead Trails through Daggett and Yermo. Daggett station recorded 6 750 autos with 21 650 passengers, including 4 830 foreign plates and 1 920 California cars. Yermo station logged 4 113 autos carrying 18 222, with 2 081 from other states and 2 032 California cars.
Las Vegas based Exchange Cafe owner Moran was held up at 10:30 p.m. two miles east of Victorville by three robbers. They took $231 and his Hupmobile sedan, which officers recovered at 2:30 a.m. in east Victorville. Moran, en route from Long Beach to Las Vegas, reported the loss.
A large group from Victorville and Barstow gathered at the Hinkley river cut-off for a Sunday picnic in the woods. A Victorville Mexican band played music as attendees danced. Swings and games delighted children while adults enjoyed picnic baskets arranged in a convivial style.
The Barstow Laundry changes ownership as Jennie 8 Kelly and W. A. Canfield sell to Street and Faraday of Los Angeles. The new owners took possession Monday and plan modern machinery. Canfield will visit the beach and Colorado then return in the fall, with no stated new business.
Mr and Mrs H G Warren of Warren California with daughters Muriel and Saint Claire arrived in Barstow by plane Tuesday noon. Warren heads the aeronautics department at California Polytechnic San Luis Obispo and plans to return to Kansas. They fly a student built ship landing at Williams field and call it a fair field. After visiting the Chas Williams home they were lunch guests of Mr and Mrs Tiernan. The same plane set last week’s 18400 foot altitude record at San Luis Obispo and the flight was sponsored by Union Oil. Howard Pendleton of U I restaurant Barstow attended Poly two years under Warren’s supervision.
Barstow will not celebrate Independence Day this year as residents head to beaches or mountain resorts. A few plan picnics at home, avoiding public events.
Mr. and Mrs. L. Jacobson will entertain a number of friends at the New berry resort the Fourth. They will enjoy the plunge and a picnic dinner under the trees. Guests include Mr. and Mrs. Morgan, Mr. and Mrs. Deskins, Mr. and Mrs. Eddy Evans, Mr. and Mrs. Beahan, Mr. and Mrs. George Henderson, Mrs. Kathryn McGrath and Mrs. Otto Christiansen.
A Needles Chamber of Commerce delegation led by Bert B. Meek met Barstow officials and state engineers in Barstow after a Needles meeting. The program outlined highway plans, federal aid, and the aim to secure a stable routing for the National Old Trails highway from San Bernardino to Needles.
The Santa Fe Railway posts a bulletin on June 1 outlining a broad rollout of farm product marketing across its states. Farmers reduce debt late in the year then restock, merchants buy more, wholesalers rush orders, and factories hire, boosting agricultural wealth and lifting business mood nationwide.
Arveda Lopez of Ludlow, about 21, died suddenly on Tuesday. Friends suspect heart trouble contributed by the heat of the past week. Her father, a Ludlow track walker, was killed last year by a train after failing to hear the whistle.
The firm Smith & Pleasant takes Ray Smith as a partner. Ray Smith, once running the Ray Smith barber shop, now works in the pool hall. Claude LaBass is transferred from the other shop to the Smith barber shop. Dick Young runs the LaBass barber shop. Ray Smith bought his shop from George Drumm a couple of years ago.
Chris Peterson a service man for the Southern Sierras and his family spent a vacation last week staying at the Southern Sierras cottages on Leevining Creek in Mono Basin. C. D. Down of Riverside will relieve Peterson in his position during the absence.
Oscar Westendorp, a Southern Sierras employee, will spend the weekend in Los Angeles. He plans to meet with colleagues and attend scheduled events in the city.
Mr and Mrs Alfred Henderson plan a July 4 stay in Big Bear Valley. Kenneth Ramsey, after driving a truck at Beauty Clay mines Silver Lake since school ended, arrived Thursday to join peers bound for the citizen's training camp Friday.
Mrs. Eddy Evans entertained many friends on Friday with bridge all afternoon. Mrs. Ivor Davies won high score and received a can of delicately perfumed body powder, while Mrs. Kathryn McGrath earned handkerchiefs for low score. Refreshments were served.
Mr and Mrs Hayden Wilson Mr and Mrs Bob Rhoads Mr and Mrs Fred Bauer and Mr and Mrs Ira Ramsey with their boys enjoyed a swimming party and supper at Newberry on Monday night. For dessert the mothers had three freezers of ice cream and five water melons and the boys ate heartily.
The George Herz Construction Company of San Bernardino won a $508 000 bid for a 294 mile stretch of the National Old Trails highway from six miles east of Amboy to east of Essex. The firm, already active from Barstow to Vermin and Mojave to Bishop, will use San Bernardino county labor and purchase materials locally as far as possible. Executives were notified by the state department of public works in Sacramento.
George Herz Jr states policy of using home labor and materials on the Amboy Essex job. E. Q. Sullivan says the 100 mile National Old Trails highway upgrade will be the district’s largest, with 44 bridges and 876000 cubic yards of excavation. One year to complete after contract signing.
