Barstow Fourth Celebrated in Victorville Tradition

Independence Day observance drew about 1200 people from Barstow Bear Valley and San Bernardino. Miss Goldie Medcalf crowned queen, parade, wild horse and bull riding, basketball, Elks band, and a high quality baseball game ended with a 5 to 2 Victorville win. Dance followed with 90 couples on the new court floor, concluding around midnight.

Government claims taxes to be collected on desert lands

Deputy Assessors Gilbert and McIntyre will launch attachment suits against owners of government desert claims who refuse to pay taxes. Most claimants have paid. the assessor argues that possessory interest supports taxation for schools and roads. Some homesteaders oppose, but many claimants are speculators holding lands for future development. Court rulings uphold the assessor’s right to tax possessory interests.

Petition to save San Bernardino County highway funds

Citizens urged to back initiative petitions to reduce annual $10,886.72 interest burden and ensure construction of Rim of the World Cut-off and other state highways. Supervisors and Chamber of Commerce push for 75,000 signatures by July 14 to place the measure on the November ballot and relieve counties from interest on state highway bonds.

Shortage of Teachers in San Bernardino County Schools

County Superintendent Mrs Grace Stanley warns that many one room and small schools may not open in September due to a severe teacher shortage. Exams for high school graduates will be held August 23 to 27, with salaries ranging from 1100 to 1500 dollars. Fred M Hunter appeals for immediate relief to avoid widespread school closures.

Ne dries Lake Leasers Seek Tax Elimination Appeal at County Board

Nedries Lake leasers led by Independents urged the county board of supervisors to reduce or eliminate taxes on government mineral leases in Searles Lake region. Merrill Chemical, Nevada Chemical and Eagle Chemical, along with named individuals, seek nonassessable or nominal taxes arguing leases lack title transfer and county could not seize land. Deputy DA advised tax collection via suits. Burnham urged nominal tax to aid solar potash research and potential property value rise if project succeeds. Rescued in Cajon Canyon Fire Saves Prospector

Forest Ranger Hanf rescued Jesse Herrington after a campfire blaze spread up Cajon Pass. Herrington was found unconscious, his clothing on fire, and Hanf beat out the flames, gave first aid, then summoned aid. Herrington, about 40, suffered serious non critical burns and awaits recovery in hospital. He planned a desert prospecting trip. origins and relatives are unknown.
