Mojave River Valley’s Mineral Boom Across Barstow Area

Barstow and surrounding valleys see new mills and mining activity. A small Calico mill claims ore $10 to $12 per ton with west Calico developments and shipments. Kramer Hill mill plans with steam shovels forty miles west. A mill between Troy and Hector 25 miles east near the Santa Fe line is under construction alongside clay shipments. West of Barstow, George Parks seeks a small mill near Waterman ranch amid gold-bearing sands. East Ord mining near Daggett yields winter gold from a tunnel as Bentonite clays are shipped from Hector to Los Angeles for drilling and construction.

New Equipment For Power Camp At Daggett

Southern Sierras Power Co received fifty new kits for its Daggett camp to support the Daggett substation construction. The camp expansion aims to serve the Newberry district if subscriber numbers justify the cost and extended lines.

Barstow Union High School defeated Claremont High School in both league games here Saturday afternoon. Barstow B won 21 to 5, Barstow A triumphed 139 to 9 as guards Wester and Carr led the attack. Ramsey Kerr and Clarke starred for Claremont in the varsity matchup, while Barstow’s defense limited personals.

Farm Bureau Meeting Postponed at Adelanto

The YNKLEY Farm Bureau postpones its next meeting originally set for Friday January 23 and reschedules to Adelanto on Friday January 20. A previous meeting at Hinkley schoolhouse discussed power rates and water conservation with attendees from Lucerne Valley and Helendale districts including the Gobar brothers Dave Junie and Roland, Judge Hoffman and local residents.

Death of George Carter Bartlow at soap mine site near Barstow

George Carter Bartlow aged 62 of Hollywood dropped dead about ten o'clock while inspecting the soap mine near Barstow. He was with his stepson Rollo Shanks of Los Angeles. The body was cared for by White & Platt. Geo Harness succeeds Wm Kopf as assistant cashier at the Needles branch of the S B V bank, replacing Kopf.

With five mules, a three month grub, and food cached for years, he insists gold remains in the hills and he expects to return with nuggets. His $5,000,000 castle project continues, but the solo desert trek takes precedence.

Legion Meets Barstow Next Monday Night

The 1931 American Legion membership drive ends February 22. Post 324 with Barstow headquarters led a district including San Bernardino Riverside and Orange counties and earned a National citation. The next meeting will be at the Boy Scout building next Monday night January 26. The 21st District Council meets in Barstow February 10.

Barstow Woman's Club convenes January 27 at 2 30 p m. Community Service is the topic with Mrs Kittie Sischo chairing. Lieut. Governor Ira C. Landis is set as the evening's main speaker this Thursday at the Kiwanis Club. George Henderson will chair with President H. L. Miller assisting. After the meeting, the Board of Directors will meet with the Lieutenant Governor. Don Rice has appointed a new Agriculture Committee, meeting in San Bernardino on February 7 to outline 1931 district activities. Lloyd Tiernan of Barstow will join the committee, representing the district, with Jay C. Loomis of Hemet as chairman.

Fenton Young Wins Golf Tournament

Barstow observers saw dust in Lenwood as Fenton Nugget Young, a petroleum products vendor, claimed first prize with a net score of 36 on a 10 handicap after a 46 gross round. His preliminary 61 set up the finish, while Jim Leggitt lay seriously ill in the Los Angeles Santa Fe Hospital shortly after.

Water meeting set for Adelanto by Mojave River valley ranchers

An Adelanto meeting for Friday January 30 at 1 15 p m in the Woman's Club building aims to organize relief over high power rates and water rights. Attendees from Barstow Daggett Newberry and three Farm Bureau centers including Hinkley Helendale and Lucerne Valley will hear from J B Brown irrigation specialist and Dick Blackburn Farm Bureau leader. The program includes power and pumping cost talks and a dinner with music and dancing to follow the sessions.

Water meeting at Yermo on January 31

A Yermo Chamber of Commerce meeting is set for 7 p m Saturday January 31 to discuss protecting Moove River Valley water from outsiders. Tom Williams says prominent speakers will attend. A prior Hinkley meeting has been postponed to Adelanto on January 30 with a Barstow rally planned for early February.
