Men Wanted for American Merchant Marine
Plans are being formulated by the United States Shipping Board recruiting service to man hundreds of new ships in the American merchant marine. Governor Stephens says the merchant marine offers one of the greatest opportunities for today’s youth and urges ex soldiers to consider employment, with wages from 55 to 75 dollars monthly plus board after two months training. ages 18 to 35.

Barstow School Partners Help Foreign-Born Learn American Ways
Barstow Union High School and local residents organized a night school to educate foreign born residents, including about thirty to forty Mexicans, in civics reading writing and geography. L. J. The coast line convention of the Brotherhood of Railway Clerks meets in Sloan Hall Barstow February 23 with about 55 delegates expected. A Santa Fe entertainment drew a crowded reading room crowd with Gertrude Bunker Alma Miller Anita Paron and Dorothy Barrington. A revival continues at the Free Methodist church with Sunday school at 10 and services at 7 30. A new house is planned by R M Dillingham on hill property as Barstow builds faster than housing. The Ladies Aid Society hosts a social tea February 18 at Union Church with a literary musical program and refreshments and a freewill offering for church work. Mr and Mrs Ralph Newhall are back for a visit while E R Waite remains home sick. Pete Osdick visits Barstow from the Atolia Randsburg district and was summoned to St Louis January 31 for his father’s death. Marvin of Marvin’s grocery visits from Los Angeles. Pete Ring travels to Los Angeles with Tine Houck managing his shoe shop. Barstow Local Draft Board work is due to complete next week with Frank Bruhn transfer to Sacramento for discharge. The St Valentine ball is advertised for Friday with four prizes and masque required on floor. Mrs Ed Harris and daughter visit Colton. they expect to return Sunday. Mrs Thos Williams of Vermo is in Los Angeles with a ill daughter. Ergenbright of Southern Sierras Power Co has been in Barstow on company business. Tom McCue elected treasurer of the local Red Cross replacing R B Layman who moved to Corona. W J Lightfoot the government surveyor visits Barstow en route to Superior Valley for land surveys.
