Uses of Tungsten in Industry and Lighting
Tungsten serves as a key alloying element in high speed steel for tools used in metal turning. It also enables incandescent lamps with nitrogen filled globes and spiral-wound filaments to approach white light, offering candle powers up to 2000. Tungsten is highly resistant to acids, melts at the highest point among metals, has superior tensile strength, is paramagnetic, can be drawn to extremely thin wires, and has a specific gravity about 70 percent higher than lead.
