Barstow vendors and residents are busy with Yuletide activities as merchants and the Chamber of Commerce decorate in front of the high school on Main Street. Frank Butts leads the project, with lights and wreaths planned along Barstow’s main street to create a holiday display attracting travelers.
The 20 30 Club elected Pat Garrett as president to replace Alfred Henderson. Newt Henderson, Herbert Gouldin, Earl Johnson, and Ivor Davies hold key posts, with Russell Riley, Leroy Phelps, Joe Williams, and Alfred Henderson as board members. The group plans a joint meeting at Victorville next Wednesday and a charter gift from the Barstow Club. About $100 was raised for the Xmas tree fund, aimed at gifts for at least 50 children, with surplus to aid needy families. Boy Scouts will seek donations Saturday.
Kiwanis Club welcomed Dr. Merton E. Hill Dean of Chaffey Junior College and Mrs Hill along with Mr. and Mrs. A. L. Moore. Moore, the school music teacher, sang with Mrs Moore accompanying. Directors agreed to assist other community groups with holiday directions and appointed a committee. Harvey Mosier resigned as trustee. Lloyd E. Tiernan elected to replace him. Mosier remains retiring president and was named trustee earlier but resigned after transferring from Barstow. George Curringham is president elect.
Renewed activity at Golden State Portland Cement plant was forecast after the California railroad commission abrogated the 1914 power contract with Southern Sierras Power Co. A new contract will be issued based on current rates, though no discrimination was found. The Riverside Portland Cement Co. links the Oro Grande mill’s closure to the old contract.
Coach Brady and his squad traveled to San Bernardino Tuesday to face the junior college freshmen. The hosts won 44 to 33 in a solid performance, marking the second loss in the season after a prior defeat to Redlands High School varsity last week.
Mrs. A V Van Aman held a small dinner party this week to celebrate her husband’s birthday. A few friends joined the hostess and honoree for the evening.
George Henry Kellar, born January 22, 1852 in Cleveland, Ohio, and long-time resident of San Bernardino County, was found dead in his home last Sunday morning. Neighbors reported him missing. authorities said he had likely died a day earlier. White and Platt handled the burial Monday afternoon with Rev. McRae giving a brief grave-side exhortation.
Forty-one members attended a Boy Scout Club gathering. Gifts were numbered and distributed by Santa Claus. Mrs. Whicker named. Treasurer Mrs. Mosier resigned. Mrs. BE. L. White appointed to finish the year. Club donates 15 to the 2030 Club for a community Christmas tree and will provide five gift boxes for county hospital.
Mrs. Harry Kelly announces an all members program from Ida M. Collins County Superintendent. Dr. L A Pechstein of University of Cincinnati will speak in San Bernardino December 19 at Sturges Junior High School 8th and E Streets. Morning lecture at 10 on Streets of the City. Afternoon at 2 on how parents and teachers irritate their children. All urged to attend.
Wednesday morning in Williams street a westbound car rear ended Charley Williams's vehicle at Second Street. The impact sent the Fisher car skidding and striking Mrs Ed Lazenby near the high school tennis court wall. Mr Lazenby said injuries could include fractured ribs and possible paralysis from shock while she regains health after a serious illness.
San Bernardino issues permit for an eleven thousand six hundred eighty dollar substation on Mill Street to Southern Sierras Power Co. The project advances utility infrastructure in the city.
Grammar school presented False Pretenses on Thursday night. The young actors delivered a well enacted comedy and earned praise from an interested audience. Imported talent and teachers were also praised for fostering strong performances.
Mrs. L T Johnson of Hackberry, Arizona visited Barstow, Elvis Holm arrives from Yellowstone to work at Tony's Cafe, Nagle brothers travel to Los Angeles for funeral of Dick Rickter former Santa Fe water service manager. Wheeler visits Bakersfield, Mrs. Tait visits Needles, McKinnon travels to Palo Alto and San Francisco with brother in law. St Joseph Church ladies plan a Daley’s Food Sale Saturday at 10. Mrs. Burden ill in Ramona hospital with heart leakage.
The Thursby Bridge Club gathered at the home of Mrs. Ralph Haan last week. Luncheon followed, then the group played bridge with Mrs. George Deskins earning the high award.
Mrs Geo Desking will spend the weekend in San Bernardino with her friend Mrs C C McIntyre.

Escondido pioneer Pete Ring arrived Wednesday night to look after local property interests. He is known as a desert pioneer and has many friends in town, and locals joke that his appearance suggests he has found the fountain of youth in Escondido.
Norman Christiansen visited Randsburg with his brothers Jim and Andrew this week to tour the Hamburger mine.
On Thursday last Mrs Charley Williams and Aviator Miles flew into San Bernardino in forty minutes reaching 7060 feet over Cajon Pass. Mr Williams followed by auto to bring Mrs Williams home. despite an hour head start he waited at the San Bernardino field for some time before arriving.
Mr and Mrs Homer Prather of Los Angeles spent the weekend with Mr and Mrs Alfred Henderson. They motored out Friday and attended the Barstow Union High School play Out of the Kitchen presented Friday evening under the direction of Mrs Alfred Henderson, daughter of the Prathers.
Bud Fissell, formerly in Barstow, is visiting from Santa Barbara where he has run a barber shop since leaving Barstow. He says Ed Abbot has left the Oldsmobile agency and now manages the Arrowhead Water Company in Santa Barbara. The Abbot couple were Barstow residents about ten years ago.
Ray Sperry of Victorville states the State Prison for First Offenders likely to be located on 1800 acres at Apple Valley five miles southeast of Victorville. An engineering delegation narrowed 117 sites to about 90 percent eliminated, with Apple Valley meeting requirements and main state committee to decide soon. If built, Victorville area gains payroll from the project.
Mr and Mrs Leonard Bush of Inglewood enjoyed the weekend with Mr and Mrs Frank West. Mrs Bush is a daughter of Mrs West. A preChristmas dinner was held Sunday due to families being unable to be together on Christmas Day.

Mrs. J S Kelly recently welcomed her mother Mrs Nancy Tyler and her brother Chester Tyler with another brother Hilton Rorie and wife from Kremmling Colorado. They left last week for San Francisco and will return to Los Angeles for a Christmas gathering. The Kellys and Mr Canfield will join them for Christmas and the party plans to stay in California for the winter.
Mrs BE Al Hughes of Davis Mr A Sagehorn of Grimes and Miss Francis Willison of Barstow took a weekend trip into Death Valley. They reported the road was in good condition and visited the mansion being built by Death Valley Scotty and partner Johnson.

TI. & Wall mechanical superintendent of the Santa Fe Coast lines visited Needles Tuesday for talks with Arizona division officials Howard Richards and G. K. Anderson road foremen of engine W. A. Birch Barstow division foreman and W. G. Vogel of Seligman division foreman regarding rail operations and maintenance.
Five new questions appear in the 1930 census questionnaire. Enumerators will ask home ownership or rent, radio presence, first marriage age, current employment, and veteran status with war served. The questions aim to classify economic status, estimate radio audience, and refine worker classifications by occupation and industry. A separate schedule will distinguish unemployed individuals into several categories.
A two day air and rail link between New York and San Francisco via Barstow and Los Angeles will start December 12, adding to the New York Los Angeles route. Eastbound departures from Alameda at 7 16 am stop at Fresno Bakersfield Winslow Albuquerque Clovis before Waynoka Oklahoma. westbound connections from Los Angeles reach San Francisco by 7 45 pm. Also changes include dinner at Albuquerque station with Harvey House dining car service.

Wright, Domestic Trade Commissioner for the Los Angeles Chamber of Commerce, visited Barstow to survey four counties Riverside San Bernardino Orange and Los Angeles to determine retail merchant requirements and how local factories can better serve them. He emphasized reciprocal trade and noted interest in Mojave River Valley dairy expansion.
The Santa Fe railroad company plans to eliminate all grade crossings in Pasadena, electrify the line, and elevate tracks from Columbia to Del Mar with a covered cut to Hill avenue. The project continues through Lamanda Park and will double track from Los Angeles to San Bernardino.
