Fire Destroys Quilt and Coats in Kramer Incident
August 15 fire at W. J. Young's prize lawn in Kramer destroyed a priceless heirloom quilt and valuable coats after A H Forbes of Los Angeles and C A Frear of Rivers Bros rested on the lawn and a lit cigar caused a spark. Loss estimated at 53.50 with no insurance, as the men tried to stamp out the blaze.

Heat Wave and Flooding Hit Southern California Rail Lines
Reports show persistent heat with temperatures hitting 100 to 115 plus across southern California. Heavy rainfall in Barstow district. Parcel Post Changes and New Rates Announced
The parcel post weight limit for fourth class mail to zone one and two rises to 20 pounds with a five cent base rate plus one cent per extra pound. Guides and maps cost 55 and 20 cents respectively, obtainable by money order to the Third Assistant Postmaster General. The changes take effect nationwide August 15 and C. O. D. remains in effect.

Scotty Sues for $50,000 Damages in Defamation Suit
Walter Scott known as Death Valley Scotty sues Los Angeles Chamber of Mines and Oil and four individuals for 50 000 damages over a Bulletin No 9 issued September 30 1912 claiming he had no mine and never had more than 200 dollars in ore. Barstow Welcomes New Oil Car Repair Outfit
Barstow gains an oil tank car repair unit moved from Bakersfield to service cars at the Mojave refineries. Ten workers plus families relocate, with more to follow. A 350 foot shed is being built to cover four new tracks, and 7000 cubic yards of earth will be used to grade the site of the old roundhouse area as crews lay new tracks.

California National Forest timber harvest in 1913 figures
Records from the district forester show that during the fiscal year ending June 30, 1913, California National Forests produced 61,572,000 board feet of timber valued at 126,719.89 dollars. Of this, 9,153,000 board feet valued at 18,011.15 dollars were cut by settlers and residents under free domestic-use permits. The total marked a about 17 percent increase from 1912.
