Feed for Milk Production Rules for Dairy Cattle

Guidance from M H Keeney of Missouri on balancing maintenance and milk output. A 1000 pound cow needs eight pounds clover hay and 20 pounds corn silage daily for maintenance, plus grain in proportion to milk produced. For 20 pounds of 4 percent milk, about half the intake goes to maintenance and half to milk. Feed all roughage and split grain by milk yield with Jersey or Guernsey at 1 lb grain per 3.25 to 3.75 lb milk and Holstein or others at 1 lb per 4 to 4.25 lb milk.
