Easter Sunday Wild Flower Display At Barstow

Hundreds of visitors are expected to Barstow on Easter Sunday to view desert wild flowers in bloom north toward the Second Summit and east toward Ludlow along the Old Trails and Arrowhead routes. Sunrise services will be at Observation Point on First Street before tours to the floral display. It is unlawful to destroy wild flowers in San Bernardino County and precautions apply to nearby Hinkley and Harper Lake districts.

Inspector at Daggett injured in auto crash near Barstow

R A Pagenkoff inspector at the Daggett horticultural station went off the Yermo Barstow highway near the Hertz road camp while driving eastward. Blinding headlamps caused him to leave the road. He was found semiconscious by two Wisconsin tourists and taken to Barstow for treatment. Initially reported a broken hip, later advised bruised with hip possibly not broken.

Barstow District Urges Bond Vote For High School Needs

A Barstow Union High School District citizen urges the creation of a building committee to select the best plan for expansion and asks voters to decide on a $100000 bond after confident proposals. Names C A Garver W A Davis and Judge Van Dyke are offered as emergency committee members.

Congregational Church Holy Week Schedule Enlivened by Easter Pageant

The Congregational Church invites all to Holy Week events in the church auditorium. Friday April 18 features The Great Tragedy and Communion services. Sunrise service is at 5 15 A M on the hill west of First Street. Easter program at 9 30 A M and Easter Sermon at 10 45 A M by Reverend Reid. Members will be received. A 7 30 P M Easter Pageant follows with another member reception. A social is set for Wednesday April 23 in the social hall. Public invited.

Barstow Club Opens Forum Amid Easter Preparations

Barstow community happenings include a Barstow Woman's Club meeting on April 22 with an Open Forum led by Mrs. Whicker. Local Board of Supervisors authorized by Railroad Commission to build a public road at grade across Death Valley Railroad near Death Valley Junction. Various notices of truck service applications, ranch leasing, Easter visits, personal trips, and social club events fill the Barstow area with spring activity.

Bids Opened for New Mojave River Bridge Project

Bids for a new 270 foot steel Mojave River bridge between Barstow and Victorville on the National Old Trails highway will open April 23 in Sacramento per BE Q Sullivan district highway engineer. The 34 foot wide structure replaces the 250 foot wooden bridge, with a straighter approach and safer curve, plus an 1800 foot oil surfaced detour.

Party at Gates Home Hosts Twenty Three Guests

Mrs Earl Gates entertained friends last Thursday night at the Gates hill side home on First Street. Twenty three guests were present with twenty playing 500. Mrs Eddie Hill held high score and received a sandwich tray. A R Meek won low score with a napkin holder. Refreshments were served late.

Court Awards Five Thousand Dollars Damages to Haws Ranch

A state highway through the Haws ranch north of the river bridge was condemned by the State. A Superior Court jury under Judge Warner awarded $5,000 for land value and damages after considering claims of $2,500 for land and $15,000 for highway impact. The defendants are Mrs Mertie M Haws and the National Bankstory Co.

Minneola residents report visits from Bell, Los Angeles, Sierra Madre and Redlands visitors. Electric power extended from Daggett to the Corel place three miles northwest. Walter Reed and son Ernest attended a Los Angeles business trip, while Arthur Evans and family spent Easter with M. A. Webber. The Cliff House at Newberry hosts Miss Lewis and kin from Redlands. A Thompson family trip to Klamath Falls preceded a dance at the Reed garage weekend.

Temporary dust control with oil will cover an 18 foot roadway. bids open Friday April 25 in Sullivan's office. Olive Garrett sister of Pat Garrett of Barstow wed Osa Randolph Powell last Thursday at the Presbyterian Church in San Bernardino. Rev Otis D Ironmonger officiated before relatives and friends. The bride wore an egg shell ensemble with sweet peas and rose buds. Bridesmaid Miss Ethel Christofferson and best man Larry Jacobs attended.
